The situation on the Polish-Belarusian border becomes tense again. According to the Border Guard, more than 110 attempts to illegally cross the border by foreigners have occurred in 1 lifetime. The largest migration activity took place in the area of SG facilities in Michałów, Płaska, Czeremsze and Mielnik.
Migrants, acting increasingly aggressively, attempted to breach the method barrier and cross border rivers specified as Piśłocz and Wołkushanka. In Mielnik, a group of about 50 foreigners tried to forcely enter Poland. any of them, located on the Belarusian side, threw stones towards Polish officers, damaging 2 vehicles of the Border Guard. Through a strong response, the services managed to halt a group of migrants straight on the border.
The increased migratory force coincides with another wave of diplomatic tensions on the Minsk-Warsaw line. In fresh weeks, the president of Belarus, Alaksandr Lukashenka, again struck Poland in his public statements. He accused Warsaw of “target provocation” at the border and supported “destructive actions” towards Belarus. During the performance of the Belarusian State tv broadcast, he stated that Poland "does not cease to interfere in the interior affairs of Belarus", and besides suggested that Polish services "intendedly escalate tensions" to trigger an global crisis.
The Polish authorities powerfully reject these accusations, stressing that the actions of the Border defender are purely defensive and service to defend the borders of the European Union. The Ministry of the Interior and Administration shall guarantee that the services stay on full alert and any effort to illegally cross the border shall be immediately neutralised.
The increasing incidents at the border indicate that the situation may further exacerbate, peculiarly in the context of the disinformation and aggressive rhetoric run from Minsk. Poland, as a border country of the EU and NATO, remains at the centre of geopolitical tension, which is addressed not only by the issue of migration, but besides by regional security.
