NEW YORK- Hawaiian Airlines (HA) expands its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operations with the introduction of daily service between Honolulu (HNL) and New York JFK, marking a significant enhancement to its longest domestic route.

Currently, Hawaiian serves the Honolulu-New York route with Airbus A330 aircraft.

Hawaiian Airlines 787 to New York

The new service commences on April 22, 2024, operating through August 20, reported Ishrion Aviation.

  • Flight HA50 departs Honolulu International Airport at 3:35 PM, arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 6:55 AM the following day.
  • The return service, Flight HA51, leaves New York at 9:05 AM, reaching Honolulu at 1:55 PM.

This route deployment indicates Hawaiian Airlines will receive its third Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner delivery before April 2025. The airline reorganizes its Dreamliner network by maintaining double daily 787 services to Los Angeles (LAX) while discontinuing Phoenix (PHX) operations.

The Honolulu-New York route spans approximately 4,960 miles, representing Hawaiian Airlines’ longest domestic flight. The journey duration and aircraft capabilities necessitate a full-service operation comparable to international long-haul flights.

While in a separate development, also flagged by Ishrion Aviation, Alaska Airlines is adding more flights on existing routes.

Alaska Airlines Upguage Frequency

Alaska Airlines (AS) expands its domestic network with increased flight frequencies across multiple routes, marking a significant shift in capacity deployment following recent Hawaii service reductions.

From its Seattle hub, the carrier doubles daily service to Cincinnati from one to two flights, while Austin connections increase from three to four daily frequencies.

Regional routes see similar growth, with Pullman service expanding to three daily flights and Bellingham reaching four daily frequencies, though the latter remains below historical levels when operated with Dash 8 aircraft at five daily flights.

Portland operations witness expansion through doubled daily services to Montana destinations, with both Bozeman and Missoula increasing to twice-daily flights. San Diego’s connection to Fresno strengthens to four daily frequencies.

Here’s the Table of changes:

Origin Destination Previous Daily Frequency New Daily Frequency
Seattle (SEA) Cincinnati (CVG) 1 2
Seattle (SEA) Austin (AUS) 3 4
Seattle (SEA) Pullman (PUW) 2 3
Seattle (SEA) Bellingham (BLI) 3 4
Portland (PDX) Bozeman (BZN) 1 2
Portland (PDX) Missoula (MSO) 1 2
San Diego (SAN) Fresno (FAT) 3 4

This network adjustment follows Alaska Airlines’ strategic reduction in Hawaii services operated with their mainline fleet. The capacity reallocation emphasizes the carrier’s focus on strengthening mainland connections, particularly in the Pacific Northwest region.

The restoration of frequencies to Bellingham signals a gradual rebuilding of regional routes, aligning with Alaska’s broader strategy of reviving services such as Portland to Fairbanks and Eugene.
