U.S. president Donald Trump gave the green light to a fresh law on sanctions against Russia, which has been under way for months, claims Senator Lindsey Graham. He added that the U.S. legislature could vote on the bill next week.
Trump proposed in November a plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, which Kiev and its European supporters rejected as a proponent of Russia, while accusing Moscow of delaying peace.
Graham, longtime hawks on Russia, reiterated this position, claiming Moscow “rejected all our efforts” to end the conflict and not sign the peace agreement, "until we increase pressure."
He spoke of a bill that he himself developed, which would let duties up to 500% to import from countries that inactive buy Russian energy products.
Moscow has repeatedly criticised western sanctions, informing that they violate global law and harm global economical stability.
"After a very productive gathering with president Trump on various issues, he gave the green light to the two-party draft law on sanctions against Russia, which I have been working on for months with Senator Blumenthal and many others" – Graham wrote on Wednesday in a post on X.
The proposed bill would let Trump "punish countries that buy inexpensive Russian oil" – added Graham.
Trump had previously suggested imposing sanctions on Russia's trading partners due to the frustration caused by the stalemate in the peace effort, but so far it has not gone further than imposing an additional work of 25% on Indian goods in connection with fresh Delhi's trade with Moscow.
India condemned this step as unfounded.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned against imposing additional secondary sanctions or duties on the main recipients of Russian oil, informing that specified measures could origin global energy prices to rise.
Even the EU, despite extending sanctions against Russia to 19 packages, refrained from punishing 3rd country partners.
Russian abroad Minister Sergei Lavrow previously called specified tariff threats ‘dirty methods’ intended to suppress rivals.
