The challenge for “green” car propagandists is that the tests carried out on the 1982 Mercedes diesel engine do not let a clear definition of its name little “organic” compared to the latest models. On the contrary, any aspects point to an overestimate ecologically.

The investigation was conducted by the German insurance company OCC. The tested vehicle, the Mercedes 240D, produced more than forty years ago, is equipped with a 2.4 litre diesel engine and 72 hp power. The test procedures were applied in accordance with the WLTP standards applicable to modern cars, both during laboratory tests and during actual driving.

The test results are surprising, especially in comparison with the achievements of modern vehicles. Mercedes 240D showed carbon dioxide emissions of 216 g CO2/km under laboratory conditions and an average of 190 g CO2/km during average driving. In comparison, the fresh Class E with diesel engine emits about 160 g of CO2/km in the laboratory.

Recently, activists have pointed to nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions as a key factor. For a 1982 Mercedes, it ranges from about 800 to 850 mg/km, which classifys it according to the Euro 5 standard. Interestingly, this older Mercedes model is more in line with standards than any modern models specified as Audi Q3 or Renault Scenic.

These results are impressive, especially given that this car entered the roads 10 years before the introduction of the first regulations on exhaust emissions.

In conclusion: The Old Mercedes can as well meet environmental requirements as modern vehicles, while maintaining its reliability and durability. It so seems fair to say that "old cars do not gotta pollute", but environmental activists can proceed to advance measures to limit their use, forcing drivers to choose between costly and little efficient electrical cars for longer distances or the usage of public transport.
