The office of the People's Army and its Warsaw-City Circuit, during the Warsaw Uprising, was located in a tenement home at 16 Freta Street. On 26 August 1944, the townhouse was bombed, and 5 activists of the Communist organization of Poland and the Polish Workers' Party, members of the Warsaw Staff of the People's Army: Colonel Bolesław Józefowicz Kowalski "Ryszard", Colonel Stanisław Józefowicz Nowicki "Felix", Colonel Stanisław Morycowicz Kurland "Korab", Major Edward Zygmuntowicz Lanota "Edward", Major Anastazy Nastek Zelikowicz Matywiecki "Nastek". Their corpse was subsequently extracted from the ruins of the tenement home and buried in a temporary grave on the property.
The 26th Brest 1945 grave of the heroes of the Warsaw Staff of the People's Army was transferred to Mordu Square in Odessa (then and now Herbert Klark Guwer Square), where a solemn ceremony was held. It was the first large celebration in liberated Warsaw. The mass grave buried the remains of 5 members of the staff of the People's Army who died on 16 Fret Street. A permanent memorial was set up in 1953. Major Henryk Wozniak "Hiszpan" was besides mentioned on the board, who died during the fighting in the Warsaw Uprising on 21 September 1944.
In 1970 the boards were listed, without importantly changing the content – the layout of the board was improved and the name from “Matewiecka” was corrected to “Matewiecki”. all year, on August 26, a celebration took place on the anniversary of the bombing of the AL staff. Of course, besides on the rebuilt tenement on 16 Freta Street was a suitable plaque, listing 5 officers of the People's Army.
In 2008, Mordu Square in Odessa began to be rebuilt and it was decided to remove the record, which was considered commemorative and in fact gravestone. In September 2008, the album was taken off, for which the Council for the Protection of the Memory of Combat and Martyrdom had previously shamefully agreed. The fact that it is simply a grave was completely ignored. It wasn't in the burial records, but it was common knowledge. This was known to the descendants of the fallen who had preserved paper clippings about the burial of their ancestors there. The families of the deceased informed the applicable municipal institutions. The Council for the Protection of the Fight and Martyrdom Memorial besides explained this strangely. It was not for no reason that this was the place where the ceremony was held on 26 August with the honorary Polish Army. Finally, the names of the fallen were on the disc. 1 large ignorance. Nothing conscious of the workers during work on underground installations dug into human remains. In addition to the remains, a watch, pre-war coins, clothing and shoe remains, a red flag with the inscription ‘AL’ was found. After examining the remains, it turned out that they belonged to 5 AL Staff officers and a twelve another unknown people, including a female and a child, possibly besides deceased at 16 Freta Street.
So alternatively of exhuming the police with an agreement with the families of the deceased, there was allegedly a random find that the families learned from the news. There's been a large scandal. Or was that the point of getting free of the grave of heroes, considered uncomfortable by the current authorities? The prosecution dropped the case and failed to see any violations of the law.
The authorities promised to put a appropriate plaque on Mordu Square in Odessa, but failed to fulfill their promise. The remains of the officers of the staff of the People's Army were yet buried at the Municipal Cemetery – Powązki (ob. Military), where at least here they behaved decently. They were assigned a seat in the office of the People's Army, on Main Avenue, other the monument to the soldiers of the People's Army: A6 quarters, government 6, right side, grave 1A. The ceremony was solemn, with the Honorary Company of the Polish Army. However, the formalities have not been completed again – the tomb search engine does not contain the names of the 5 buried officers of the People's Army, but only the designation "NN – remains No. 182".
Nor is the case of the sixth officer of the People's Army, Major Henry Wozniak "Spanish", who died respective days later, explained. It was mentioned on the gravestone on Mordu Square in Odessa, but at the same time it has its own separate, name-marked grave at the Municipal Cemetery – Powązki, in the office of the People's Army. He besides has the incorrect age: 33 years alternatively of 34 years. So after moving the remains to Powązki, he has his 2 graves, respective decades apart.
There is no grave or any another commemoration of the heroes of the Warsaw Staff of the People's Army at Mordu Square in Odessa (see Herbert Klark Guwer Square). On 26 August, anniversary celebrations, performed by leftist environments, are held on 16 Fret Street, at the commemorative plaque, which has not been successfully removed.
