Euro MPs from the opposition criticise Donald Tusk's speech to the European Parliament on the plans of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. In the opinion of law and justice politicians, the priorities presented by the Polish government deficiency accents applicable to our country. In their view, the issue of the planned European Union-MERCOSUR agreement and the modification of the Migration Pact is peculiarly important.
The ability to defend, defend people and borders, opposition to abroad interference and disinformation, safety and freedom of economical activity, energy transformation, competitive and resilient agriculture, wellness safety are the 7 pillars of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, which falls in the first half of 2025. The Ministry of abroad Affairs besides adds to this cooperation with planet powers, strengthening the EU-NATO relationship, as well as openness to the aspirations of non-Community countries wishing to join a united Europe.
Many politicians and European policy experts believe that the opportunities of a country that leads the EU at the time are frequently overestimated, bringing its function to a purely method role. On the another hand, there are cases where the priorities of the Presidency have been powerfully penetrated into the public and political debate of the Old Continent. At the same time, they have influenced circumstantial decisions or, although they have initiated certain actions which at the time were in line with the priorities of the Community as a whole.
The opposition points out that the minute erstwhile Poland takes over the Presidency of the Council of the EU is not 1 of the happiest and that the Union itself is facing serious problems.
– If, today, all that has happened in the European Union in fresh years is done by Donald Tusk, Ursula von der Leyen and Angela Merkel, and we truly have a political and economical degradation, then we should start with the word "I am sorry, we have been wrong, we have erred, migration policy, Green Deal was a mistake, we are withdrawing from it," it would be a good opening. – says Newseria Waldemar Buda, associate of the European Parliament of Law and Justice.
In the opinion of the MEP, there is simply a deficiency of a clear declaration among the Presidency's priorities regarding the planned agreement of the European Union - Mercosur, which is protested not only by Polish but besides by French farmers. The agreement is intended to open up the EU marketplace for food products produced in South American countries.
– From a Polish point of view, I deficiency a clear declaration that the Mercosur case will be placed in this half-year for the council, will be blocked and there will be a blocking number including Poland. We have not heard specified announcements – underlines Waldemar Bud.
However, this is not the only deficiency in this comparison according to the Euro MP of the Law and Justice. MEPs, mainly from conservative groups, pay attention to migration issues.
– We have besides not heard about the launch of the procedure at the European Council regarding the revision of the Migration Pact, he will shortly enter into force in a form that Donald Tusk accepted in December, and we know that this is very unfavourable for Poland, we can pay for any emigrant who has arrived, for example from Germany to Poland and who we want to relocate, expel from Poland or refuse to accept it – says the Euro MP of Law and Justice.
According to Waldemar Buda, the Polish Presidency, in specified a form and at specified a moment, can weaken the position of Poland and the EU on the global stage, mainly in relations with the United States. He pointed to the beginning of Donald Trump's presidency, whose views powerfully miss the political aspirations of Warsaw and Brussels.
– This Presidency is seriously weakening us due to the fact that present we gotta face the sharp individual conflict of Donald Trump and Donald Tusk. This individual aversion from Donald Tusk's earlier behaviour causes us to lose very much. We are losing on relations, firstly Polish-American, and secondly European-American, and this is the tragedy of this situation – Says Bud.
There is no uncertainty that it is besides late for any changes in the priorities of the Presidency. He estimated that an additional problem was the ongoing election campaign.
– Donald Tusk will want to deal with the presidential run and cover up decisions he made earlier at the European Union level, and not deal with any issues that are inactive on the table today. He does not want to, he does not intend to, so it is hard to treat this Presidency as Polish – He summarized.
Other opposition representatives sitting on the benches of the Euro-Parliament besides talk in a akin tone. Jadwidzę Wiśniewska's MPs were missing during the Prime Minister's announcements of the revision of climate policy, which, according to her critics, may be a serious brake on the EU economy.
– Draghi's report, commissioned by the European Commission, clearly shows the decline in competitiveness and productivity of European industry, and this study shows that the origin is simply a restrictive climate policy - says Jadwiga Wiśniewska, associate of the European Parliament of Law and Justice.
It thus referred to a study published in early September 2024 entitled "The future of European competitiveness". His author, Italian economist and erstwhile president of the European Central Bank (2011–2019) Mario Draghi, listed climate policy as 1 of the problems that could hamper the Community economy.
– If we want to compete in global markets, a revision of climate policy is necessary, unfortunately there is no specified announcement. On the another hand, there is the announcement that this policy will be implemented, as Tusk did on 11 December 2024, signing the issues of speeding up the implementation of climate policy and the Migration Pact, the implementation of the Migration Pact together with the forthcoming presidencies, namely Danish and Cypriot – lists the policy of the PiS.
Poland is chairing the Council of the European Union for the second time. This was the first time in 2011. besides then the Prime Minister of Poland was Donald Tusk. The current Presidency period runs from 1 January to 30 June 2025. Then Denmark will take the lead.
The importance of the rotating Presidency of the EU Council changed in 2009 with the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty, which brought it more to a method and honorary role. This is due to the fact that since the beginning of 2010, there has been a position of permanent president of the Council of the EU within the EU structures. Nevertheless, many associate States usage this time to advance and item crucial issues.
