There were 70 passengers and 11 crew members onboard the aircraft. As per some aviation news sites, the plane made a U-turn due to suspected hydraulic system complications impacting flaps operations. Some even said that there were issues with engines. However, United Airlines said it was a mechanical issue.
United flight 147 returned to London Heathrow airport to address a potential mechanical issue. The flight landed safely and was subsequently cancelled.
We are working to rebook customers on the next available flight to Newark.”
United Airlines Spokesperson said
The flight was operated by Boeing 767-322ER, registered as N665UA. Further, it is a 26.7-year-old aircraft powered by PW4060 turbofan engines. The United transatlantic fleet is getting old and they will eventually be replaced by 787s in the coming years.

Similar Incidents
A United Airlines Boeing 767-300 aircraft performing a London Heathrow to Newark Liberty International Airport route conducted an emergency landing on Saturday, March 1, 2025, after experiencing a significant hydraulic system failure shortly after departure. The incident unfolded in the early evening, triggering a comprehensive emergency response protocol at one of the world’s busiest international airports.
The flight, identified as United Airlines Flight 941, carried 63 passengers and 10 crew members when pilots detected a critical mechanical issue.
Airport authorities immediately mobilized fire crews, paramedics, and operational staff to manage the potentially complex emergency landing scenario. The aircraft’s overweight landing condition further intensified the operational challenges.

Engine Malfunctions
Similarly, a United Airlines Boeing 757-200 conducted an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, after detecting suspected engine malfunctions during its early morning departure. Flight 1544, scheduled to travel to Las Vegas, returned to Newark shortly after takeoff when crew members identified potential critical engine issues.
The flight departed Newark around 6 a.m. and quickly initiated emergency protocols upon recognizing the mechanical complications. Pilots successfully navigated the aircraft back to the airport, prioritizing passenger safety throughout the incident. All passengers and crew members disembarked the aircraft without experiencing any physical harm or complications.
United Airlines swiftly managed the disruption by transferring travelers to a replacement aircraft. The alternative flight to Las Vegas departed approximately four hours later at 10 a.m., minimizing passenger inconvenience while maintaining strict safety standards.
In a concurrent incident on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, another United Airlines flight experienced a critical situation during its departure from Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Flight UA1879, originally bound for Los Cabos, Mexico, returned to the airport after reporting a potential cockpit windshield malfunction.
The flight crew initially communicated a possible cockpit fire during the early stages of departure, prompting an immediate emergency response. Chicago Fire Department personnel dispatched to the scene conducted a thorough investigation. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed no active fire was present, and the aircraft remained secure without requiring firefighting intervention.
