Despite the ongoing war, Ukraine recorded an increase in natural gas extraction in 2024. According to ExPro, full production reached 19.12 billion m3, an increase of more than 2% compared to the erstwhile year. This is the second year in a row erstwhile Ukraine increases gas extraction, and the growth rate in 2024 was the highest since 2018.
Increased investments in the mining sector and modernisation of infrastructure have contributed to these affirmative results. The contribution of state-owned companies, which importantly increased their production, was peculiarly important.
The increase in production is crucial for Ukraine's energy independence, peculiarly in the context of the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Since the beginning of 2025, Ukraine has imported 1.12 billion cubic metres of gas, which represents almost 10 times the import compared to the same period in 2024.
According to Ukriformin, this information was provided by the consulting company ExPro Consulting.
"The import of natural gas to Ukraine since the beginning of 2025 has been 1.12 billion cubic metres on 5 May, according to ExPro. Compared to the same period last year, import volumes increased nearly 10 times – from 118 million cubic metres in 2024 to 1.12 billion cubic metres in 2025", the study states.
It should be noted that the most gas was imported from Hungary - 669 million cubic metres. 261 million cubic metres of blue fuel were imported from Slovakia and 190 million cubic metres from Poland.
At the same time, the main importer was the Naftohaz Group, which accounted for 80% of imports. any private companies besides imported gas for further sale on the Ukrainian energy exchange.
As Ukriformin reported, in late April Ukraine signed a debt agreement of EUR 270 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and improvement and a grant agreement of EUR 140 million from Norway for the urgent acquisition of 1 billion cubic metres of gas.

It is widely known that both Hungary and Slovakia have Russian gas. However, the question remains: why does the country, which generates as much gas as Poland consumes annually, inactive gotta import it?
It seems that the explanation is agriculture. Prior to the Russian invasion in February 2022, the production of fertilizers was twice as advanced as in Poland. Then there was a crucial drop, but already in 2023 they were produced as much as in our home. seemingly production in 2024 and 2025 returned to at least comparable level from 2021.
Available statistic only mention an increase in production in 2022 and 2023 by 81%.
Hence, Russian gas seems essential for the functioning of Ukraine.
It is simply a Truism to remind that money received through Hungary and Slovakia is spent by the Moscow government on reinforcements, and so Ukraine contributes to strengthening the military possible of its top enemy!
The situation was akin after 2014, erstwhile Ukraine allegedly found itself in a state of actual war with Russia.
The apartments in Lviv or another Kiev were inactive heated with Russian gas, while Ukrainian weapons factories were full steamed producing parts for Russian weapons, including ballistic missiles, which posed a threat to the Free World!
