It has been known for respective weeks that this year's Easter and the period after it will be highly costly for Poles. First, the government decided not to apply zero VAT to foodstuffs, and now the largest retail chains have started to rise the prices of their products. Implicative boom is already felt.
Donald Tusk's "Easter Happy emergence in Food Prices" is coming in large steps. As could be expected, its effects are already tangible even before the fresh VAT rate for food entered into force.
According to the latest marketplace investigation conducted by experts from the Pan Paragon application and businessinsider.com.pl portal, the costs associated with food are beginning to increase. Over the last week, prices of basic food products have increased by 1.5%.
Despite the assurances of Finance Minister Andrzej Domański, who stated on Polsat News in the programme "Graffiti", that customers would not experience a 5% increase in VAT, as so far the beneficiaries of the price increase were shops which are now to lower their rates, nothing happens and prices in stores are already rising.

We pay more and more for fruit and vegetables. Over the week, tomato prices increased by almost 10% and potatoes by more than 7%. Could it be a strategy to convince Poles that in April nothing has changed and at the same time let shops to gain even more before Christmas?
Will 2 raises replace one?
It is worth reminding that German giants on the Polish marketplace – Lidl and Aldi – announced that in April they would not increase prices due to the increase in VAT. Raising prices before Easter is simply a large way to avoid losses and at the same time preserve credibility. Will Ladybug, competing in price with Lidle and being 1 of the main players on the market, besides do the same? Can local shops afford specified “promotions”?
What does that mean for customers?
The answer seems simple. alternatively of 1 raise, we're gonna have two. The first before Easter, to convince that nothing has changed, and the second most likely scheduled for May, related to the VAT suspension.
It can already be predicted that by year Poles will spend about PLN 12-13 billion more on food than in the erstwhile year. That's what economists estimate.
