PUTRAJAYA— Malaysia Airlines (MH) emergency flight MH720 landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) after receiving a cargo fire alert while en route from Jakarta (CGK) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) on March 18, 2025.
The aircraft carried 115 passengers and seven crew members. All of them safely disembarked after landing at 6:18 pm. Flight crews activated standard emergency protocols, including deploying fire extinguishing agents in the forward cargo area as a precautionary measure.

MH720 Safety Protocols Implemented
After touching down, air traffic controllers directed the aircraft to a remote bay where passengers and crew evacuated without incident.
Fire services and technical personnel immediately positioned themselves around the aircraft to conduct a thorough assessment before opening the cargo doors.
“The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew are always our top priority, and we remain committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety at all times.”
-Malaysia Airlines stated in an official release
Before the landing, flight tracking service FlightRadar24 reported on its Facebook page that MH720 was “squawking 7700” south of Kuala Lumpur—the international transponder code indicating a general emergency.
Malaysian aviation authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire alert. No injuries were reported during the incident.
The flight was operated by a 12.3-year-old Boeing 737-800 aircraft registered as 9M-MXN.
