Historical calendar: the anniversary of the Russian massacre of Poles and Jews in Humania by the rebel peasantry. About 20,000 people died.
Today in our calendar we will look at the circumstances accompanying this event.
The catalyst for the peasant rebellion was the start of the Bar Confederation. The struggles of Poles against the Moskals and the royal army at any point led to the creation of a power vacuum on Ukraine. The Confederates were driven west and despite abroad aid, they began to lose.
The weakening of the local centres of power and the departure of a large number of nobles in another area of the fighting, exasperated the Cossack and the peasantry. In June, the mass revolt of the Russian black rebellion, called Coliseum. Ivan Gonta and Maxim Żeleźniak, who formed armed troops of the so-called. hajdamaks.
Although the revolt lasted only a fewer months in the summertime of 1768, it led to massive cultural cleansing and crucial harm to property. Poles and Jews were killed, and especially the Roman- and Greek-Catholic clergy were treated cruelly. This shows that attachment to Orthodox religion was an crucial origin for rebellion.
The biggest tragedy was the Human massacre. Humane, a private town of the border magnate Franz Salezy PotockiIt was well prepared for defense. Thousands of people knew that, and that's where they were fleeing the fire. Tens of thousands of nobles and Jews took refuge in the city.
Unfortunately, the Russian part of the Humania community helped the Hajdamaks to conquer the city. There was a betrayal of the mercenary Cossacks and letting the besieged city walls. The most terrible slaughter of the 18th century took place on Polish lands, comparable only to the slaughter of Prague from 1794. The Hajdamacs spared no one. They set fire to churches and murdered people fleeing them. Jews were cutting off limbs and parts of their faces. They treated priests and monks from the basilian monastery the same way. Estimates of the number of victims of the massacre are different, as many as 20,000 people.
The full number of Collision victims is estimated at 100 to 200,000 people. The uprising was suppressed by Russian and Polish troops, faithful to King Poniatowski.
