EU records have shown that in fresh years the number of human trafficking victims in the EU has increased by at least 41%, although these data may be importantly understated as many victims are most likely not identified – informed the European Commission.

The EC study on advancement in the fight against trafficking in human beings in the EU shows that in 2021 the full number of registered victims of trafficking in human beings in the Union was 7,155 and a year later 10,093, an increase of 41%.

And we are talking only about matters detected," the Commission stressed.

Most cases were reported in France, then Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Romania. Poland has been ranked seventh in the EU with around 700 reported cases.

According to the EC, the most widespread form of specified crime remains the trafficking leading to sexual exploitation.

This procedure concerns all second victim of trafficking in human beings, most frequently women, who account for 92% of those abducted (68 percent of the cases detected were adults, 24 percent - minors). Overall, the number of victims of trafficking in women then forced to prostitution increased from 3811 cases registered in 2021 to 4014 cases in 2022; most of them were recorded in France and Germany.

The second most widespread form of trade is to force work, which accounted for 37% of all cases detected in the EU and most commonly suffered by men (70%). In fact, this form of human trafficking was the majority of cases detected in Poland, and we have little frequently reported cases of sexual trafficking or alleged purposes of others, specified as coercion of begging or crime.

In fresh years, the number of children who have been victims of trafficking in human beings has fallen by 3%, with 19% of cases of trafficking in human beings detected in the EU presently affecting minors. The largest number of children's victims were found in France, Romania, Germany and Italy.

With respect to nationality, more than half of all victims were from outside the EU, including Nigeria, Ukraine, Morocco, China, Bangladesh or Brazil.

As the EC estimates, human trafficking is 1 of the most profitable crimes in the world, right after the arms and drugs trade. In fresh years, the European Union has stepped up its fight against this form of crime by adopting an overall EU strategy and updating legislation. The revised directive on the prevention of trafficking in human beings, which came into force last summer, places, among another things, the emphasis on better protection of children and incorporates sex abuse on the net into the list of crimes.
