Former president of the United States and current Republican candidate for this office, Donald Trump, one more time sparked controversy by threatening to close Google. Trump claims the search engine intentionally censors information about the assassination of his life. In an interview with Fox News, the politician expressed his concern about the actions of an online giant and warned that “Google must be careful”.
Controversy and Accusations
Trump, known for his expressive statements and uncompromising approach, stated that Google “behaving very irresponsiblely” and stressed that legislature might not accept the current situation. “Google is very bad. They acted very irresponsiblely and I have the impression that Google will shortly be closed due to the fact that I don't think legislature will accept this situation," Trump said in an interview.
Online platform bombings and reactions
In late July, Trump publically accused Google and Meta of deliberately censoring information regarding the assassination of his life, which took place on 13 July in Pennsylvania. According to Trump, both platforms made it hard for users to access information on this subject. "Facebook admitted that he mistakenly censored the photograph from the Trump assassination effort and was caught. The same applies to Google. They made it almost impossible to find information about this shameful act," wrote erstwhile president on his platform fact Social.
User and Google reactions
After the assassination, many net users began sharing screenshots showing what results appear in Google after entering the word "attack". Auto-filling the search engine did not propose results related to the Trump attack, but there were hints about another known historical figures specified as Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, John Paul II, or Martin Luther King.
Google denied Trump's allegations, explaining that in the event of an assassination on his life, the search engine operated a preventive filter related to political force that is applied to all politicians. Google’s spokesperson pointed out that there was no intention to censor information.
Apology and Tensions
Nevertheless, in an interview with Fox News, Trump stressed that he inactive did not receive an apology from Google. Unlike Meta's boss, Mark Zuckerberg, who called the erstwhile president to apologize for miscensoring Facebook photos of the assassination. Zuckerberg's apology was related to errors that led to a regulation of access to applicable information for platform users.
