Sunday, December 10, 2023 will be an open day for shops and another Trade Sunday The coming day will be December 17, 2023. These changes arise from the amendment of the law governing trade on Sundays, which has been in force since Tuesday. Importantly, shops will be able to operate in full hours.

Under the fresh regulations, if Christmas Eve is on Sunday, a trade ban will be introduced that day. On the another hand, 2 preceding Christmas Sundays will become an open day for trade.

This year, commercial days before Christmas are December 10th and 17th.

It is crucial that shops can besides operate after 14. Initially, a commercial Sunday was planned to be moved from 24 to 10 December according to a government project, but subject to the fact that the shops would close by a maximum of 14.

This task was rejected by most of the parliament, and another was approved, which does not impose restrictions on beginning hours. This means that stores will be able to operate in average hours on Sunday, December 10.

According to the origin of Legaartis, ALDI stores will open on Sundays from 7:00 to 8:00 both next Sunday (10.12) and next Sunday. On the another hand, the beginning hours of Ladybug stores may vary slightly, but most of them will be open on both Sundays from 8:00 to 10:00.

Lidl announced on his website that the beginning of the shops would take place both on December 10 and December 17. Usually, stores will be open between 8:00 and 9:00, according to most cases.

No trade on Sundays. Key principles

As of March 1, 2018, the bill entered into force, gradually restricting trade on Sundays. However, since 2020, the ban has been relaxed for 7 Sundays per year: last Sundays of January, April, June and August, Sundays before Easter and 2 Sundays before Christmas.

Under the law, there is simply a catalogue of 32 exceptions to the ban on trade on Sundays. It does not include, inter alia, postal activities, provided that the gross from it represents at least 40% of the gross of the institution concerned. In addition, the exemptions besides apply to bakeries, ice cream shops, fuel stations, florists, press shops and cafes.

The consequences for violating the ban on trade on Sunday are financial penalties ranging from PLN 1000 to PLN 100 thousand. In the event of persistent violation of the law, there is simply a punishment for restrictions on freedom.
