GUANGZHOU— China Southern Airlines (CZ) has restarted its plan to sell its Boeing 787-8 fleet, listing 10 aircraft and spare engines for an online auction through the Shanghai United Assets and Equity Exchange.

The airline previously paused the sale earlier this year but has now relaunched it, with the assets located in Guangzhou (CAN) and offered as a complete package to both domestic and international buyers.

China Southern Airlines 787 Auction

China Southern Airlines (CZ) is putting 10 Boeing 787-8s up for sale along with two spare GE Aerospace GEnx-1B engines. The listing was updated on August 28 and is valid until September 25, according to the exchange.

The auction will be conducted through the Hong Kong Stock Exchange online bidding system in a one-hour session.

The airline states the sale is aimed at optimizing its fleet structure. Each aircraft is valued between CNY 359–382 million (USD 50–53 million), but bidders must purchase all 12 assets together.

The combined starting price is set at CNY 3.96 billion (USD 545 million). China Southern has made it clear that the jets will not be sold individually, keeping the package intact for potential buyers.

No physical inspections of the aircraft will be arranged prior to the auction, according to the listing. Delivery will take place in Guangzhou (CAN) or another mutually agreed location. The lack of inspection suggests the airline is targeting institutional buyers or lessors familiar with aircraft transactions rather than private operators.

Background on the Boeing 787-8s

China Southern Airlines (CZ) was the first Chinese carrier to operate the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, receiving its initial delivery in 2013. These jets were mainly deployed on long-haul international routes.

However, with changing market conditions and a shift in fleet planning, the airline is gradually phasing out the smaller 787-8 in favor of newer, more efficient aircraft types that better align with its long-term strategy.

Bottom Line

The move reflects a broader industry trend where airlines reassess fleet composition in response to evolving demand, operating costs, and sustainability targets.

By auctioning its 787-8 fleet, China Southern (CZ) is signaling a pivot toward larger or more modern aircraft models better suited to its network and future growth plans.
