The russian councillors rejected the thought of a referendum on the organisation of migrant centres and free public transport. The decision sparked a stormy discussion, especially in the context of the opposition of any residents to admission from Asia, Africa and the mediate East.
Referendum rejected – Residents will not be heard
During the Tuesday gathering of the Sopot City Council, a club of Law and Justice Councillors proposed a referendum that would let residents to express their opinion on respective key issues:
- Organisation of centres for migrants,
- Increasing backing for civilian defense,
- Introduction of free public transport,
- Free parking in the paid parking area for residents,
- Creating restricted entry zones.
Unfortunately, most councillors rejected the project, preventing the sopocians from participating in decisions concerning their city.
Opposition to Immigration – “This is hatred speech”?
Councillor Jakub Świderski besides presented a resolution expressing opposition to the admission of immigrants from Asia, Africa and the mediate East and the creation of centres for them in Sopot. The paper caused controversy, especially among the alleged "smiled" who considered the wording of the referendum question to be a manifestation of hatred speech.
The city council president, Aleksandra Gosk, stated that the question:
"Do you support the creation of Sopot residence centres for African, Asian and mediate east migrants, which may affect transforming Sopot into a multicultural community"
– is characterised by discrimination.
President of Sopot, Magdalena Czarzyńska-Jachim, however, recalled that Centres for the Integration of Foreigners were created during the regulation of the Law and Justice. In 2022 they were piloted in Opole and Poznań as places to facilitate adaptation in Poland.
What's next for immigrant centers in Sopot?
Finally, both resolutions – both concerning the referendum and opposition to migration – were rejected by a majority. This means that the city authorities can proceed plans to organize centres for foreigners without consulting residents.
Will Sopot become a multicultural city?
The decision of the councilmen shows that despite the opposition of any of the population, the process of creating centres for immigrants will progress. Will the residents accept this change? Time will tell.
