The word “potentially dangerous asteroid” sounds alarming but does not mean an expected collision with Earth. This is simply a method category utilized to continuously monitor large adequate objects whose orbits are approaching the orbit of our planet.
Name more dangerous than forecast
Reports of an asteroid approaching Earth regularly bring out sensational headlines. However, the classification of PHA, a possibly dangerous asteroid, is not a message of an upcoming impact. NASA includes objects in this group with adequate brightness, and so most likely larger, whose minimum distance between orbits is little than 0.05 astronomical units. That's about 7.5 million kilometers.
This criterion serves to establish reflection priorities. Astronomers measurement the location of the object multiple times, improve the calculations of the orbit and check future approximations. The PHA description itself says that the asteroid deserves attention in the long term. He doesn't say there's a collision on the next flight.
Space and Earth Distance
On a solar strategy scale, a fewer million kilometers is close. From the human point of view, this is simply a distance many times greater than the average distance of the Earth from the Moon, about 384,000 kilometres. Therefore, information about the passage must always be combined with a circumstantial trajectory forecast, not just with the category name.
The strategy of reflection of objects close to Earth is an component of civilian security. Ground and space telescopes detect asteroids, and computing centers catalog their orbits. The DART mission showed in 2022 that the impact of the probe could alter the movement of a tiny body. The planetary defence has ceased to be nothing but a subject of fantastic literature.
Science is needed, not panic
Poland does not independently run a global strategy of planetary defence, but Polish astronomers and observers participate in the investigation of heaven. This is an area where the state should support science, data analysis and global cooperation. Space hazard can't limit a loud headline. They are limited by patient observation, accurate calculations and technology.
