Poczta Polska announced a crucial employment reform, which aims at optimising the structure and reducing costs. The voluntary departure programme, which will enter into force in a fewer weeks, is expected to cover more than 9,000 workers, representing 15% of the full crew. The cost of this programme is estimated at around PLN 600 million. What do these changes mean for employees and what will their consequences be for the future of the Polish Post Office?

1. Voluntary Departures: Details and Costs

Poczta Polska introduces a voluntary exit programme in consequence to rising labour costs, which account for as much as 65% of its expenditure. Compared to competition, where employment costs oscillate between 35% and 45%, The Polish Post Office tries to reduce these expenditures by:

  • Programme referral: The programme will cover about 15% of employees, or 9 000 people. This process will take place in 2 stages: the evaluation of employees and the change in the organisational structure, followed by the invitation of selected people to benefit from the programme.
  • Compensation: Those who choose to benefit from the strategy will receive an yearly wage as a form of compensation for voluntary departure. The full cost of the plan will be around PLN 600 million and will be spread over a year.

2. Who's going to be the Obeyer?

The voluntary departure strategy will not cover workers straight linked to postal operations specified as postmen or post office workers. It will mainly be addressed to those employed in non-operational functions, which means that most of the management and administration process will be covered by the programme.

3. Polish Post Transformation Plan

The voluntary departure programme is part of the wider transformation of the Polish Post which aims to transform the company into a modern courier-detail-financial-digital company. Key elements of the transition plan include:

  • Modernisation of IT: Poczta Polska plans to invest about PLN 500 million in IT systems in 3 years. The aim is to optimize and automate processes to improve operational efficiency.
  • Change of Roli Stations: Post offices will be adapted to the needs of local communities. In tiny towns they are to service as a Citizens' Service Centre, while in large cities they will be more diverse in terms of functions – from socio-cultural to commercial.
  • Investments in Facilities: Investments are planned in the postal facilities themselves, which will be determined after inventory. full investments in 3 years are expected to scope respective billion PLN.

4. Future and Cooperation

Poczta Polska is besides considering cooperation with Orlen on the network of parcel vending machines, which can increase its efficiency and availability of services.

Transformation of the Polish Post and the introduction of a voluntary programme to leave are key steps towards modernisation and optimization of the company's operations. Although this programme involves major costs and changes in the structure of employment, it aims to make a more efficient and modern postal company that responds better to the needs of modern customers.
