In the face of the coming winter, costs of heating homes become a burning subject for many Poles. Prices of coal, gas and wood – basic fuel natural materials – are changing rapidly, affecting household budgets. Will home heating become a luxury for few? Let us look at current data and forecasts for the upcoming heating season.
Current prices of fuel natural materials
Coal
Coal has been a basic origin of heat in many Polish homes for years. However, its price has fluctuated importantly in fresh years. At the tallness of the energy crisis, prices exceeded PLN 2500 per tonne. Currently, in January 2025, prices of bulk coal, specified as Karl and Pieklorz (granulation of 5-25 mm), oscillate within the limits PLN 1150-1250 per tonne. On the another hand, Retopal peas from KWK Piast-Earth are available from 950 PLN per tonne.
It is worth noting that in March 2025 the prices of fuel coal fell by close 80% over a three-year period, which is an anomaly in energy.
Gas
Gas heating is gaining popularity due to comfort and ecology. However, gas boiler users gotta prepare for the increase in bills by 27%, which represents a crucial burden on home budgets.
Wood
Firewood, although little popular in cities, is inactive readily selected in agrarian areas. Unfortunately, there is no precise data on current fuel wood prices in Poland for 2025. However, given the overall trend in rising energy prices, it can be assumed that wood prices have besides increased.
Future projections
Experts foretell that in 2025 electricity prices for companies can emergence to the level 650–850 zł/MWh, depending on the level of consumption and kind of contract. This suggests that households can besides experience an increase in electricity costs, which will affect overall maintenance costs.
It is besides worth paying attention to forecasts of electricity prices in the coming years. From 1 July 2024 the maximum price for 1000 kWh will increase to PLN 500and forecasts for 2025 presume further increases. The increase in electricity bills can be average 20-25% per month, which translates into higher household expenditure.
Alternative heating sources
In the face of rising prices of conventional heating materials, more and more people are considering alternate heat sources. Heat pumps become an attractive option, especially since users of these devices can save even 22% on heating costs. However, the first costs of the installation are high, which could be a barrier for many households.
The rising prices of fuel natural materials have a direct impact on the budgets of Polish families. Increases in heating costs may lead to the request to quit another expenditure or to search savings in another areas. For many people, heating a home in winter becomes a luxury that is increasingly hard to afford.
The heating of the home in winter is becoming an expanding financial challenge for Poles. The rising prices of coal, gas and wood, as well as the projected increases in electricity prices, make maintaining heat at home a luxury. In the face of these challenges, it is worth considering investments in alternate heating sources, specified as heat pumps, which can bring savings in the long term.
