Soon, as a consequence of the fresh EU regulations, Poland, 1 of the leading producers of chicken eggs in Europe, may face a major crisis. The European Commission has announced that fresh egg labelling regulations will enter into force as of November 2024. Although the changes aim to improve transparency and food safety, their implementation involves many challenges and concerns.

New Recipes: What Changes?

In accordance with Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2464, eggs must be stamped straight at farms and not, as yet, at the packaging stage. This fresh request aims at improving egg traceability and minimising the hazard of mislabelling, which is crucial in the context of food safety. but where associate States let labelling in the first packing centre, but only if specified exclusion does not undermine the objectives of traceability.

Challenges for Manufacturers

For many Polish producers, especially smaller companies, fresh regulations may prove hard to implement. The introduction of labelling at the production site requires large investments in fresh technologies and adaptation of infrastructure. These changes entail additional costs which may affect the prices of eggs and egg products.

Maciej Ptaszyński, president of the Polish Chamber of Commerce (PIH), points out the possible consequences for consumers: “If the prices of eggs and the products that contain them increase, this can become a pro-inflation factor. In the long word this could affect the full buying basket of the average Pole.”

What are the Valuable Forecasts?

According to experts specified as prof. Krzysztof Damaziak of the SGGW, the increase in egg production costs is inevitable. The cost of purchasing feed, hens, media, building maintenance and staff already represents over 70% of the egg production price. The fresh regulations will only increase these costs, which will translate into higher egg prices on the store shelves.

We are already seeing signs of rising prices. In the face of the introduction of fresh legislation, further increases are expected. This may mean that shortly shortages may happen on the marketplace and egg prices will scope unexpected levels.

Possible Solutions

In order to mitigate the effects of fresh regulations, Polish producers will gotta adapt rapidly to the fresh requirements. possible solutions may include:

  • Investment in modern labelling technologies: acquisition of appropriate egg stamping equipment straight on farms.
  • Cooperation with another producers: Actions to address costs and production organisation problems jointly.
  • Adaptation to changes: Searching for ways to optimise costs and increase production efficiency.

The introduction of fresh rules on egg labelling is simply a step towards greater transparency and food safety, but besides a major challenge for Polish producers. These changes may affect the prices of eggs and egg products, leading to possible shortages and increased costs. The final effects will depend on the pace of adaptation of the manufacture and the ability to meet fresh requirements.
