DELHI- Noida International Airport (DXN) in Jewar will not meet its April 2025 deadline for scheduled passenger operations due to construction delays at the terminal.

While the cargo terminal remains on track for completion by April-end, passenger terminal construction has fallen behind schedule.

Noida Airport Launch Delay

The airport has already notified airlines about the delay and is exploring the possibility of launching cargo operations first.

A spokesperson for Noida International Airport (NIA) told Hindu BusinessLine, “Noida International Airport is steadily advancing toward operational readiness. The Airport Authority of India is advancing its work in the air traffic control tower, and construction of the passenger terminal and associated infrastructure is progressing steadily.”

The spokesperson confirmed submission of the aerodrome license application and draft aeronautical information publication for January publication, adding that they are working through necessary regulatory steps with aviation and security authorities.

“Our commitment remains steadfast: to deliver a safe, world-class airport that meets the expectations of passengers, airlines, and all stakeholders,” the spokesperson emphasized.

No specific date for passenger operations has been announced, but BusinessLine sources indicate the launch may be delayed until July-August or possibly later. Initial plans called for commercial operations to begin on April 17, 2025.

According to reports, a new inauguration date will be finalized during a meeting chaired by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on March 10.

Zurich Airport is developing NIA in partnership with the Uttar Pradesh government. The first phase includes a single runway with capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually. The airport was originally scheduled to open in December 2024, but that deadline was pushed to April 2025 due to construction material delivery delays.

Domestic, Int’l and Cargo Together

Noida Airport initially planned to commence operations with 25 domestic flights, three international, and two cargo services. However, they can start cargo ops and later commence domestic followed by international flights.

Low cost carriers such as IndiGo Airlines (6E) and Akasa Air (QP) will operate trial flights with all crew onboard to test the runway functionality and operational systems ahead of its launch this year.

Noida International Airport’s development plan encompasses four comprehensive phases that will ultimately position it as India’s largest airport. The ambitious project spans 5,000 hectares and includes plans for multiple runways and two terminal buildings to accommodate growing air traffic demands.

The facility targets completion by the mid-2040s with a projected annual passenger capacity of 1.2 crores (12 million). Beyond passenger terminals, the infrastructure will integrate dedicated cargo facilities and comprehensive Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services to support diverse aviation operations.

NIA will function as the Delhi-NCR region’s third commercial airport, operating alongside the established Indira Gandhi International Airport and Hindon Air Base. This strategic expansion directly addresses the increasing aviation demands in India’s capital region.

The airport’s location enhances transportation accessibility for northern India, creating a new gateway for domestic and international travelers. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s second airport—Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA)—is also progressing toward operational status, with services expected to begin this year.
