Leon XIV called the leaders of Russia and Ukraine to a common table and to enter into peace talks. The Pope spoke about this during a press conference described on 29 September by Polsat News. The Vatican is to proceed to defend human dignity. For Poland this means supporting diplomacy without giving up on safety concerns.

The Church is to remind of human dignity

Leon XIV clearly defined the function of the Church towards the war in Ukraine. It is intended to constantly encourage Russian and Ukrainian leaders to talk, dialog and search a way out of the conflict. The Pope stressed that the Vatican would be the voice of values based on human dignity.

This position remains consistent with Leon XIV's earlier appeal for peace and support for the east Churches. The Holy See has no military force or political means of force comparable to the states. However, it has moral authority and the ability to remind that concrete people, their families, suffering and fear are behind the messages from the front.

In this sense, the papal appeal is not a ready political plan. It is simply a reminder of a border whose policy should not exceed: a man cannot be brought to a position in the war balance. The Church has the right and the work to appeal for this fact besides erstwhile the language of diplomacy becomes cold and subsequent wartime messages become common.

Conversation cannot mean surrendering the truth

A call for dialog is needed, but it does not itself find the conditions of future peace. Each agreement must be assessed after its effects and not after the wording of the declaration itself. Peace separated from truth, work and lasting safety guarantees can only be a break before the next phase of violence.

The Church should appeal for human life and dignity, and governments have a work of cold assessment of threats. These roles are not contradictory. The moral appeal does not release states from work for defending citizens, borders and their own sovereignty. At the same time, political realism must not lead to indifference to the suffering of the civilian population. The scale of human consequences of war shows the problem of missing personsThat leaves thousands of families unanswered.

The conversation table is simply a tool, not a value in itself. It is intended to lead to a permanent simplification in force and make conditions in which people can live safely in their homes. Therefore, 2 extremes must be rejected: naive belief that the gathering alone will solve the conflict, and the belief that any effort to talk is simply a sign of weakness.

Poland needs a security-based peace

For Poland the stake is direct. The war is taking place behind our east border, and its consequences affect the safety of the state, economy and everyday life of Poles. Warsaw should support real diplomatic efforts but must not confuse peace with unconditional concessions to force.

Polish policy needs this order of concepts. Mercy and concern for sacrifices are the foundations of Christian civilization, but the work of the state besides requires anticipating the effects of decisions. Peace will be good if it protects people from another war, alternatively of simply removing the threat in time.

The Pope's voice reminds us of the goal of ending the bloodshed. It remains the task of the states to guarantee that the road to this nonsubjective does not build the future on a fragile illusion. At the same time, Poland's state requires a desire for peace and hard guarantees that the safety of our part of Europe will not be the subject of another people's fairs.
