BOSTON- A JetBlue Airways (B6) flight arriving from Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) veered off the runway and rolled onto grass after landing on Thursday morning.

The incident involved JetBlue Flight 312, operated by a new Airbus A220, which exited the runway during taxiing at approximately 11:55 a.m. local time. No injuries were reported.

JetBlue Flight 312 had just landed at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) when the aircraft veered off the paved surface and came to rest on a grassy area.

The Airbus A220, delivered in 2024, was turning off the runway when the incident occurred.

Massport, which manages operations at BOS, confirmed that passengers were safely deplaned via mobile stairs and transported to the terminal by bus. As a safety precaution, the affected runway was temporarily closed.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) briefly issued a ground stop at the airport to manage inbound traffic and later lifted it.

There were no injuries among the passengers or crew onboard. JetBlue issued a statement emphasizing that safety remains its top priority. The airline is conducting an internal investigation and cooperating fully with federal authorities.

The FAA confirmed that it has opened a formal investigation to determine the cause of the runway excursion. According to FAA records, the aircraft involved was recently manufactured and placed into service this year, making mechanical failure less likely, though all possibilities remain under review.

Union Monitoring and Passenger Safety

The Transport Workers Union of America Local 579, representing JetBlue flight attendants, acknowledged the event. President Tyesha Best confirmed that all crew and passengers were safe and that the union is coordinating with the airline to support those affected.

Airport officials praised JetBlue’s swift response in securing the aircraft and evacuating the passengers, and no disruptions to emergency protocols were reported.

The incident led to a ground delay at BOS on Thursday afternoon, affecting approximately 14% of departing flights. Operations resumed shortly after the FAA lifted the ground stop. FlightAware data showed minimal long-term disruption to Boston Logan’s overall schedule.

A Huge Crash Today

An Air India (AI) flight en route from Ahmedabad (AMD) to London Gatwick (LGW) crashed moments after takeoff, killing at least 204 people. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was operating as Flight AI171.

The flight departed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) on Thursday with 242 passengers and crew on board. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft issued a mayday call before crashing into a residential area, triggering a large-scale emergency response.

Timeline and Location of the Crash

Air India Flight AI171 took off from Ahmedabad (AMD) at 13:39 IST (08:09 GMT), scheduled to land at London Gatwick (LGW) by 18:25 BST.

According to India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control less than a minute after departure. They crashed in the Meghani Nagar area, a densely populated neighborhood.

The crash site included a doctor’s hostel, where multiple injuries occurred on the ground. One survivor from the building, a woman’s son, reportedly jumped from the second floor during the impact.

The aircraft gave a mayday call, but no further communication followed. Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 recorded the last altitude at just 625 feet (190 meters). All operations at the AMD airport were suspended after the incident.

Casualties and Survivor Details

Authorities confirmed 204 fatalities as of the latest reports. Among the 242 individuals on board were:

• 53 British nationals
• 169 Indian nationals
• 1 Canadian national
• 7 Portuguese nationals

Tragically, most passengers and crew perished. One survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national in seat 11A, told local media that the crash occurred “30 seconds after take-off” following a loud noise. His brother Ajay, who was also on the flight, remains unaccounted for.

Aircraft Profile and Technical Concerns

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, part of Air India’s 58 Boeing aircraft fleet. This is the first fatal crash involving this model in Air India’s history.

Aviation experts suggested that a possible misconfiguration of wing flaps during takeoff might have contributed to the crash.

Verified footage showed the aircraft descending with landing gear down and flaps possibly retracted—conditions that may lead to insufficient lift. However, experts cautioned that the video quality is too poor to confirm this definitively.

Airline and Government Response

Air India confirmed the crash on the social media platform X, stating it was cooperating with investigative authorities. CEO Campbell Wilson expressed “deep sorrow” and affirmed that the airline’s current focus was on supporting the victims’ families and staff.

Tata Group, the airline’s parent company, announced compensation of ₹1 crore (approx. £86,000) to the families of each deceased passenger and full medical coverage for the injured.

India’s Aviation Minister and the Gujarat state government have launched rapid rescue and relief efforts. Emergency services were mobilized immediately, and relief operations are being conducted on a “war footing.”

International Reactions and Support

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “stunned and saddened” by the tragedy and assured continuous monitoring and aid coordination. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “devastating” and said his government was in contact with Indian authorities to assist British nationals.

King Charles III also issued a statement, expressing shock and commending the emergency responders for their efforts in such traumatic circumstances.
