The European Union has been pursuing an ambitious climate policy for years to accomplish carbon neutrality. However, not everyone sees these changes as a step towards a better future. The documentary “Hung 2025. To plow agriculture” by Łukasz Korzenowski, who premiered on the PCh24.pl portal, warns against the dramatic consequences of the Green Deal for European and Polish agriculture.

The movie includes Anna Bryłka, Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski, Tomasz Kolanek and another experts. As they say, the Green Deal can origin crucial problems with food safety and economical stableness in Poland.

Green Deal – ambitious targets or hazard to agriculture?

Green governance, 1 of the flagship programmes of the European Union, involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy transformation and more sustainable agricultural practices. However, in Poland and another countries of the region, this programme is met with criticism.

Anna Bryłka, an expert on climate policy, in the movie "Funging 2025" describes Green Deal as "climate religion". In her view, EU regulation is not only an unnecessary burden, but besides a threat to the agricultural sector, which faces the request to adapt to fresh environmental requirements, specified as reducing the usage of fertilizers or methane emissions.

Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski, erstwhile Minister of Agriculture, warns:

"Europe wants to finish. This is an extended suicide.”

Climate taxation ETS2 – additional challenge

One of the main criticisms is the ETS (European Trading System), which will include buildings and transport from 2027. Agriculture will besides be affected by this regulation. Experts inform that the introduction of the ETS2 climate taxation may increase agricultural production costs, which in turn will lead to increases in food prices or shortages.

Economist Dr. Artur Bartoszewicz points out in his study to NSZZ “Solidarity” that:

"The suspension of ETS1 would origin energy prices to fall by half."

EU-Mercosur agreement – a threat to Polish farmers?

Another problem is the trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries (including Brazil and Argentina). The paper assumes the abolition of customs duties on agricultural products imported from South America, which could importantly undermine European competitiveness, including Polish food producers.

The authors of the movie indicate that inexpensive food from Mercosur countries, produced under little restrictive environmental conditions, can flood the European market, leading to the collapse of many local farms.

What next with Polish agriculture?

The "Famine 2025" not only warns but besides calls for changes in the approach to climate and agricultural policy. It points to the request to defend Polish agriculture from unfavourable regulations and policies which, according to critics, may lead to a deepening of the food crisis in Europe.

Does Green Deal truly plow agriculture? The discussion around this program is inactive ongoing, and voices specified as Bryłki and Ardanowski show that the stakes are huge. Food safety and the future of agriculture are issues that require not only attention but besides action at the highest decision-making level.
