Anniversary of the execution of Antoni Żubrid and his pregnant wife Janina.

Today in our calendar we will look at the life and activities of Antoni Żubryd ps. “Zuch”.

Antoni Żubrid was born on September 4, 1918 in Sanoku. From 1933 to 1936, he was educated at the Infantry for Minors School in Srem. He then served as a professional lieutenant in the 40th pp in Lviv, training conscripts.

In the 1939 defensive war, he fought for Warsaw. For his courage he was awarded the conflict Cross and promoted to sergeant. He got into German captivity, but in late autumn he returned to Sanoka divided by a demarcation line between Germany and the Soviets. There, he became active in the creation of conspiracy cells, but as early as January 1940 he was captured by the NKWD erstwhile crossing the border. He was then forced to cooperate with russian peculiar services.

After the Germans seized Sanok and discovered this fact, members of his household were arrested, and on November 5, 1941 his own. He was imprisoned in Sanoku, later in Tarnów and Krakow. In late 1943, he returned to Sanoka and began hiding.

After the Red Army entered, he volunteered to make a communist repression apparatus. In September 1944, he entered service at the Sanoku territory Public safety Office as an investigative officer. The obscure occupational past resulted in a deficiency of assurance in the superiors. In the face of the arrested native conspirators, he was not a zealous investigative officer. He gave the families the flu from the arrests.

At any point he was informed by a friend that the superiors knew about his conspiracy statements and would want to arrest him. Therefore, on June 8, 1945, he deserted his service at UB, releasing 2 detainees on the occasion. He then established communication with the commander of the local NOW–AK branch. A week later, he executed an underground conviction on his fresh superior, PUBP manager in Sanoku.

The hostages detained his mother-in-law and his four-year-old son. Meanwhile, Żubrid, thanks to his individual czarism, gathered a large branch. In the autumn of 1945, most of the forest branches operating in the districts of Brzozów, Krosno and Sanok were under his command.

He submitted to NSZ's command, and the branch was named the Independent Operational Battalion of NSZ and operated on a group basis, with the advanced autonomy of the individual company.

The Żubridovists fought UB officers, their agents, the CBW troops and members of the PPR. They besides protected the local Polish population from UPA attacks. During the highest period, the population of the group was about 150 guerrillas.

On June 23, 1946, the division suffered large losses. However, it was decisive for his destiny to introduce the Żubrid of the UB impostor to the environment Jerzy Vaulin, who killed both “Zucha” and his wife Janina, 8 months pregnant, on 24 October 1946 in Malinówka (Brzozów). The burial place of matrimony remains unknown to this day.

The perpetrator of the crime, Jerzy Vaulin, was the manager of documentary cinema after the war. He died in 2015. He never responded for his act.

As if that were not enough, in the times of the Polish People's Republic, the movie “Firemaster of the Kalen” was created in which a completely false biography of Antoni Żubryd was presented.
