Grzegorz Braun, a Polish MEP, was punished by the European Parliament for 2 controversial speeches. In the first case it is about his words during the debate on LGBT people, and in the second case about disrupting the minute of silence commemorating the Holocaust victims. What consequences will Braun have, and what does this mean for his activities in the EP?
Punishments for “insulting language” towards LGBT people
During the debate on 27 November 2024 on the Hungarian law prohibiting the promotion of sex change and homosexuality in schools, Grzegorz Braun made a controversial statement. - How much sex is there? Men, women and individuals with personality disorder. This apparent fact is being questioned here," said the Polish MP.
His words met with the immediate consequence of Vice-President Katarina Barley, who reprimanded Braun and cut off the microphone. However, this did not end his statements. – Sodomites are, I believe, the lost proletariat of the planet revolution you request so badly to run your projects. Stay distant from our children, perverts," he added.
For these words, Braun was punished by the president of the European Parliament (the largest crime habitat from all over Europe) Roberta Metsola. The punishment includes the deprivation of the right to participate in the proceedings for 2 days (keeping the anticipation of participating in the votes) and the failure of the Euro MP's allowance for the same period.
The regular allowance of the Euro MP shall be EUR 350 and shall be a lump sum to cover the costs of accommodation, meals and another expenses related to the work of the EP. This means Braun will lose a full of 700 euros.
Disturbing Minutes of Silence: Another Punishment
However, this is not the end of Grzegorz Braun's problems. Metsola besides announced punishing him for disturbing a minute of silence at a memorial gathering of the Holocaust victims. During the ceremony, Braun exclaimed respective times: “Pray for the victims of the judaic genocide in Gaza.”
The EP president found this to be unacceptable and excluded Braun from the meeting. There's no telling what punishment he's gonna get for this. In accordance with the Rules of Procedure, possible sanctions include:
- The reprimand,
- Prohibition of representing the EP in interparliamentary delegations, conferences or interinstitutional forums for a maximum of 1 year,
- Loss of the right to receive a regular subsistence allowance for 2 to 60 days,
- Temporary suspension of participation in the EP for a period of 2 to 60 days.
What does that mean for Braun?
The 2 penalties imposed on Grzegorz Braun show that the European Parliament does not tolerate behaviour deemed offensive or disrupting the agenda. For Braun, this means not only financial losses but besides limiting its ability to act in the EP.
Will these penalties affect his continued activity in the Euro-Parliament? That question remains open. 1 thing is for certain – Braun does not intend to stay silent, and his controversial statements proceed to origin turbulent reactions.
