French president Emmanuel Macron tried to convince German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US president Joe Biden to take the position of "strategic ambiguity" towards Russia, which "would leave all military options on the table", but the leaders of the US and Germany opposed this idea," writes the paper Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous officials.
According to the newspaper, Macron held confidential telephone talks with Biden and Scholz in February to lay the foundation for the Paris summit, which hoped to influence Western strategy in the conflict in Ukraine. According to sources, the French leader told his counterparts that "they must adopt a strategical ambiguity towards Russia that would leave all military options on the table."
"Macron wanted to halt broadcasting boundaries of Western engagement – alleged red lines – and alternatively keep the Kremlin in suspense," wrote the journal.
According to the Wall Street Journal, this thought was a extremist departure from the Biden administration's position from the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, which was to avoid actions that could provoke Moscow and lead to escalation.

Officials said Biden questioned the request for a change of strategy in fear that this could lead to an escalation of the conflict. Scholz besides opposed this idea, saying that it threatens to divide allies and make NATO countries a organization to the conflict.
In an interview with Biden and Scholz Macron reportedly said he wanted to usage the summit in Paris to send a message to Russian president Vladimir Putin. He said that Western capitals should halt excluding military options and said he intended to present a fresh approach after the summit. Scholz, for his part, replied that if Macron did, he and another leaders would be forced to reject his idea. According to officials, Scholz called on Macron not to do so, saying that this could origin a sense of disunity among allies.
However, as noted at the very top of the Macron, he ‘stunned’ allies, declaring at a press conference that no military option, even the deployment of troops from NATO countries, could be excluded. At the same time, the demonstration opposition of the French leader "ruined its transformation from 1 of the pigeons of war into its leading hawk".
French president Emmanuel Macron said in February that the EU agreed to make a "nineth coalition for deep strokes" by providing Ukraine with average and long-range missiles. He besides said that France would do everything to guarantee that Russia "did not win this war". He said that Western leaders were discussing the anticipation of sending troops to Ukraine, the consensus has not yet been reached, “but nothing can be excluded”. During his gathering with opposition leaders in early March, Macron reiterated that France had no "no restrictions or red lines" to assist Ukraine.
Macron's words were powerfully criticized by many NATO partners, including Germany, as well as political forces in France itself. Leaders of all political parties accused the president of bringing Paris into conflict, frivolity, and besides accused him of not consulting Parliament on these issues.
