Circipania

Circipania (‹See Tfd›GermanyCircipanien, Zirzipanien) was a medieval territory in today's northeastern Germany. The name derives from Latin circum (circular) and Pane (river) Peene). The region was about restricted by the advanced rivers Recknitz, Trebel and Peene, the western border ran east of Güstrow. The region developed in the 10th and 11th centuries erstwhile it was tribal territory of Circipanes (‹See Tfd›GermanyCircipanen, Zirzipanen), a West Slavic tribe that together with neighboring tribes was part of Lutici Federation. The main cities were Teterov, Malchin and Demmin.

In 936 Circipania was incorporated into the March Billung of the Holy Roman Empire.

Circipanes were 1 of the 4 tribes forming part of the Lutici Federation centered around Rethrywhich began a successful uprising in 983. Having disposed of the sovereignty of the empire, Circipanes remained at the Liutians until the break-up of the federation due to interior fighting in the 1950s, the culmination of which was a breakdown in 1057.

Redarians and The Tollens against Circipanes and Kessinates struggling for greater influence in the national administration and allied with Obodrites.

The Obodrites successfully invaded the Circipania and made it a state of their kingdom.

The interior struggles weakened the area to specified an degree that the following year it became the mark of many expeditions of the expansionary Holy Roman Empire during the Indian Crusade in 1147), then Denmark during the invasion in 1170 and yet the Duchy of Pomerania, which subjugated and incorporated the area into Pomerania-Demmin in the late 12th century.

The last part of the territory was invaded by Mecklenburg and conquered in the early 1930s.

In the 1930s, the end of Circipania occurred as a separate territory, as well as the end of Circipanes.

Pomerania-Demmin found herself in a sad position and lost most of its territory to Margrave of Brandenburg under the Treaty in the Kremlin in 1236. Thus Pomerania-Demmin was incapable to defy the Mecklemburg assault commanded by Borwin III of Rostock.

Circipania remained divided with Mecklenburg controlling the western mass from Güstrow and Teterov, with Pomerania controlling the east insignificant part around Demmin. Later, the Mecklenburg part divided into Mecklenburg-Rostock and Mecklenburg-Werle, and the name Circipania came out of use.

Although Circipania disappeared as a name from political maps, however, on Roman Catholic church maps it was inactive visible as a Pomeranian state Diocese of Cammin, due to the fact that the borders of this state did not disagree from the borders of Circipania and remained as they were before the conquest.

Circipanes, whose numbers had already decreased as a consequence of earlier wartime activities, were assimilated by German settlers called upon by the Prince of Pomerania Warszia III before the Mecklenburg conquest and by the Mecklenburg knighthood in time Ostolidung.

etymology

Ethnonim derived from hydronim, meaning those who live behind the Piana River or on both sides.

Pre-fixed derivat from the Praslovian preposition *čerzъ ← *čersъ (by), preserved, among others, in Russian čerez/через, Slovenian čerz, Serbochorovack črëz; absent in modern Polish.

In western sources they happen as Circipanien, Zirzipanien and the name is translated from the Latin circum (around). The probability of the Slavs utilizing the Latin name is low.

The similarity of the cherez/circum is either a coincidence or a Praindo European kinship.
