Will there be a review of the conviction of erstwhile Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro? There's a proposal

Lawyers of erstwhile Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro filed a motion on Monday to review the ultimate Court ruling of last month, condemning politics to over 27 years in prison for attempting to coup after losing the presidential election of late 2022.

In an 85-page application made to the court at the last possible time, Bolsonaro's lawyers, as reported by Reuter's agency, challenged part of the sentence, including the prison conviction to which the erstwhile president of Brazil was sentenced. In September, 4 out of 5 members of the ultimate Court ruling board voted to convict Bolsonaro for 5 crimes, including participation in an armed criminal organization, an effort to force the abolition of democracy, and the organisation of a coup.

The aim of the assassination, as stated in the explanatory memorandum, was to prevent the re-election of the left-wing president, Luiza Inacio Luli da Silva, after he won a tiny advantage of the 2022 presidential election vote.

Bolsonaro's defenders have asked for correction of mistakes, contradictions and ambiguities which in their opinion influenced the ultimate Court's verdict. "There are crucial points to explain, without which the conviction raises suspicion that it is profoundly unjust," they wrote in the justification of the application of the erstwhile President's defender, presently under home arrest.

In September of this year, the ultimate Court of Brazil sentenced Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and 3 months in prison for directing a criminal group which on 8 January 2023 carried out a political sympathizer attack on the main state institutions in the capital of the country, Brasilia, which has been declared a coup attempt. 70-year-old Bolsonaro, who consistently denied all accusations, held the highest office in the state from 2019 to 2020. He is the first president of Brazil to be sentenced to prison.

The media recalls that the United States introduced on 6 August 50 percent duties on imports of a crucial proportion of Brazilian goods as sanctions for "witch hunt", as stated by US president Donald Trump on the charge of coup d'état and sentencing Jair Bolsonaro to prison.
