This question appears increasingly in various kinds of analyses.

Defiant president Bashar al-Assad with their household and colleagues, they found safe shelter in Russia.

Russian bases inactive in Syria

At the same time, militants associated with Turkey groups seemingly avoid clashing with the Russian military contingent inactive present in that country. They do so despite the fact that even a fewer days ago, their positions were bombarded by Russian air force trying to even a small support the troops faithful to the president. At least until it turned out that these troops were not going to defy more and put Hajat Tahrir ash-Sham into control further cities without major fighting.

Alawite Region

The next fewer weeks will show whether Russia will hold its strategically crucial presence in the mediate East and the Mediterranean. It is primarily about ports in the north-western part of the country – Latakia and Tartus, as well as the Humaim Air Base located next to the former. From this point of view, the future destiny of Syria may be important. If it does not act as a unitary state, it is possible that these areas will be under the regulation of the alawites, who should easy find a common language with Moscow.

Status of regional power

This is crucial for respective reasons. Firstly, it allows to control the situation besides at the entrance to the Black Sea, strategically crucial for Russia, primarily due to the Ukrainian conflict. Secondly, it will preserve the instruments of influence for the full region of the mediate East, maintaining the position of a supra-regional power capable of shaping the situation on different continents. Thirdly, it will prevent the excessive growth of Turkey's importance in the region. Finally, the Humaim base is of vital importance for Russian military and commercial operations (airway, stopover point) in Africa.

Multipolarity

However, a possible decision to end the presence in the region may let Moscow to focus on problems closer to it geographically – especially Ukraine and post-missive space. It is worth noting that the U.S. besides does not intend to interfere in any peculiarly direct way with developments, although their military bases inactive function in the oil-based areas of east Syria.

Perhaps this is the end of the era of planet powers ready to intervene anywhere on Earth, and the beginning of the era of a multipolar planet in which each power will affect only its immediate surroundings (Syria is specified an environment primarily for Turkey and to a lesser degree for Iran).
