Although the north of Poland struggles with snow and winter aura, in Elbląg the threat has a very different character. A strong northern wind can lead to a dangerous phenomenon of the alleged cofka, that is, the pushing of water from the Vistula Basin into the Elbląg River. On Tuesday morning, the river level exceeded an emergency state of 610 cm, prompting the city authorities to introduce a flood alarm.

President Elbląg Michael Missan made the decision to rise his readiness. The alert is valid until further announcement and means full mobilisation of urban and emergency services.

Standby, situation under control

According to Elbląski Magistrate, the situation is monitored on an ongoing basis and remains under control. At the same time, the authorities do not underestimate the threat. Weather forecasts indicate a strong northern wind, especially in the afternoon, which can further rise the water level in the river.

It is the wind from the Vistula Basin that represents the top risk. Under specified conditions, the natural outflow of water is blocked and the river begins to emergence rapidly, threatening the areas closest to its trough.

Sandbags for residents

As part of the preventive actions, the services have prepared sandbags that residents can already choice up. The distribution points were launched at the Boulevard of Zygmunt August (in the area of Panińska Street) and at the intersection of Grochowska and Szczecznicza Streets.

Additionally, a sand loading base was launched at Kwiatkowskiego Street. Residents can fill bags and safe their property. This is simply a proven and effective solution, based on the engagement of the local community, not just on central administrative decisions.

Riverside safeguards

As early as Sunday, 5 flood sleeves have been spread along the Elbląg River. They are designed to defend delicate sections of the wharf and prevent water spills in the event of further increase in river level.

City authorities call on residents to be careful, not to approach the river, and to follow the instructions of the service. In crisis situations, civic discipline and work are crucial.

The weather shows its strength

The situation in Elbląg one more time recalls that natural threats have not disappeared, and the state and local governments must be prepared not only for political or military challenges, but besides for the effects of utmost weather phenomena. Local preparation, fast decisions and real action in the field present are more crucial than media declarations.

The next fewer hours will be crucial. The improvement of the meteorological situation depends on whether the flood alarm remains a preventive measurement or whether further protective action is required.
