Republicans are starting to retreat the US from the UN

Republican legislators began efforts to retreat the United States from the United Nations, with concerns that the global humanitarian organization and human rights did not advance American interests and did not adapt to president Donald Trump's "Americana First" programme.

Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, presented on Thursday a bill called Disengaging Entirely From the United Nations Debate Act of 2025, which would end US membership in the UN and its related bodies and fund these groups. Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, is co-sponsor of this measurement in the advanced chamber.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, is ready to present this bill in the home of Representatives on Friday, claiming that the UN and its organs do not advance American interests.

"The United Nations has evolved into a platform for tyrants and the site of attacks on America and its allies," Lee said in a Thursday message for Fox News Digital. “We should halt paying for it. While president Trump revolutionizes our abroad policy, putting America first, we should retreat from this apparent organization and give precedence to real alliances that will guarantee the safety and prosperity of our country."

The United States provides the UN with more backing than any another country, passing over $18 billion in 2022., according to the American think tank on abroad policy Council on abroad Relations. This represents about a 3rd of the full UN collective budget.

"The United Nations has utilized US taxation money, frequently undermining our interests, attacking our allies and supporting our opponents," Roy said in a Thursday message for Fox News Digital.

“What has the United Nations achieved?” Roy said. "Despite all the money and attention, this corrupt globalist organization has for decades not prevented wars, genocides, human rights violations or even pandemics."

Roy specifically identified UN organisations, specified as (UNRWA) which helps Palestinian refugees and their descendants.

However, the organization was under scrutiny after the UN investigation showed that UNRWA workers may have been active in the attack of the Palestinian Hamas militant group on Israel on 7 October 2023. The United States temporarily suspended UNRWA backing in January 2024 in consequence to the report.

“No sensible country would tolerate specified a thing” said Roy in his statement.

The co-authors of the government were Republican organization representatives: Mike Rogers of Alabama , Eli Crane of Arizona, Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee, Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, Harriet Hageman of Wyoming, Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.

The Act besides states that the United States cannot participate in peace negotiations with the UN and prohibits the executive from entering into any agreements on membership with the UN or its subsidiary organisations without the consent of the Senate.

The UN has besides met opposition from Democrats in the face of the Israel-Hamas conflict. For example, 11 Democrats joined Republican counterparts by sending a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres in October 2024 claiming that the UN had not maintained neutrality and "strongly opposed Israel".

The legislators referred to the United Nations General Assembly resolution by which Israel is to return all the land and assets it has taken over in the Palestinian Territories since 1967.

"We will not accept the continued hostility of the UN to our ally of Israel" – the legislators wrote.

Trump tried to cut or reduce backing for UN groups during his first word of office and did so besides in his second term. In February, he signed an executive regulation withdrawing the US from the UN Human Rights Council and cutting backing for UNRWA.
