Overproduction of energy from RES puts the energy strategy in difficulty. This results in interventions which are increasingly leading to the exclusion of PV plants. This is simply a challenge facing the national energy network operator and the full energy sector.

The 3rd intervention this period on renewable energy (RES) is only the tip of the iceberg. Poland is entering a delicate period for its energy network, where the hazard of excluding PV plants increases all day. The Polish Energy Networks (PES) admit that periods with surplus energy can become increasingly frequent, which poses many challenges for them and another energy sector players.

Why is it coming to this?

On Wednesday, March 27, at 11:55 a.m., the energy produced by photovoltaic plants covered half of the country's demand. Although this is affirmative information from the point of view of the energy transition, a fast increase in the share of energy from the sun while inactive producing advanced heat plants can origin production increases and overpower throughout the system. This is due to the fact that the expanding power of photovoltaics must be balanced in the system.

The Polish Energy Networks already had to intervene 3 times this month, ordering power simplification in photovoltaic power plants. The last specified exclusion took place last Tuesday. It is worth noting that this concerns photovoltaic plants alternatively than private micro-installations.

Light on the Problem:

Overproduction of energy from RES is simply a problem that affects not only Poland. Countries with a large share of renewable energy sources, specified as the Czech Republic and Germany, are besides facing this challenge. The increase in power from photovoltaics generates periods with surplus energy, especially in spring and autumn.

In order to address excess energy, PSEs usage high-pressure power plants and reduce energy production in heat plants. However, the second cannot be completely excluded, as they are essential to keep the stableness of the system.

Disable Private Installations:

The exemptions to date afraid mainly PV plants, but not private micro-installations. Even in the case of evidence overproduction in 2023, PGE Distribution confirmed that she spared her own prosumers.

Increasing power from RES forces investments in various forms of energy retention and the request to improve network infrastructure. PSE besides shows that different forms of energy surplus management, e.g. through heat retention or heat pumps, are important.

Overproduction of RES is not only a national problem, but besides a challenge for another countries with a large share of renewable energy sources. Action is needed at both infrastructure and regulatory levels to guarantee the stableness and efficiency of the energy strategy in the face of fast power growth with RES.
