British ministers are trying to convince the Canadian government not to affect King Charles III in a dispute with the president of the United States Donald Trump during a monarch's visit to Canada “ The Times reported, citing a origin acquainted with the discussions.

British King Charles III will pay an authoritative visit to Canada on 26-27 May. As previously reported by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, on May 27, the king will give a speech in the parliament of this country.

"British ministers are trying to convince the Canadian government to skip Charles III in controversy with Donald Trump, and Canadians are powerfully opposed to it," said the paper an anonymous origin from the Commonwealth of Nations.

The paper notes that during its visit to Canada, Charles III, as head of the Commonwealth of Nations and King of Canada, plans to convince the country and Prime Minister that Britain is supporting Canada and opposes Trump's claims to the state. As prof. Philip Murphy, head of the Center for past and Politics at the University of London, added, the King's speech in the Canadian Parliament will most likely include a mention to Trump.

"What we will most likely see is simply a speech (king – ed.) from the throne, in which there will be a mention to Trump and what is happening. There will be a strong subtext in it, and the Canadians want to see it. The Canadians ... will want to emphasize that Charles is not only king of Canada, but besides of the United Kingdom (Great Britain and Northern Ireland – ed.) ... and his arrival may show that Britain is on the side of Canada in all trade dispute with the United States," quotes Murphy newspaper.

Canada is simply a constitutional monarchy. The country is part of the Commonwealth of Nations, with the British monarch as a formal head of state. It is represented by the Governor-General, who performs mainly ceremonial functions. In practice Canada is simply a national parliamentary democracy independent of the UK.

U.S. president Donald Trump has repeatedly advocated joining Canada to the United States, indicating that the northern neighbour does not spend adequate on defense, hoping to defend Washington. Trump besides said Canada could avoid Washington's trade duties and receive military protection if it joined the US as the 51st state.
