Already on the first video footage and photos that appeared on social media after the attack of the Ukrainian army on the course circuit, on vehicles were visible a symbol of the triangle.

This kind of component placed on military equipment is a designation for the fast recognition of the ' alien'. As the Ukrainian and Russian armies usage very akin and sometimes even identical equipment, the hazard of shelling their own troops is thus minimised.

Ukrainian attack on Russia. "Mysterious" symbols on vehicles

As the analysts of the war in Ukraine emphasize, the white 3 sign utilized by Ukrainian troops since June 2024. It was painted on machines belonging to units stationed close the border with Belarus. It was there that the troops were utilized to offensive actions in the Kurdish Oblast.

Another symbol to be seen on equipment belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine were e.g. white equilateral crosses.

The symbol was painted on vehicles that participated in the Cherk offensive in September 2022. At the time, as the Ukrainian military explained, this was related to elements that appeared on the Cossack conflict banners, among others, on the flag of hetman Bohdan Chmielnicki, as well as on the Cossack seals.

Photographs of Ukrainian vehicles marked with "beam crosses" appearing in social media have sparked a wave of accusations of cultivating neo-Nazi ideology in the ranks of the ZSU. However, fewer have gone to large lengths to survey the past of the symbol. And there's something to dig into.

The commentators threw themselves into discussion without wasting time on the task of 1 fundamental question: why did the Ukrainians start painting crosses on their vehicles?

I hope that the following material will shed any light on this – not so simple – issue.

Small introduction to the topic

One of the terms most commonly utilized by Russian propaganda is the “Cronazis”, allegedly concentrated in the unit “Azov”, but besides found in another places and institutions of the Ukrainian state. Thanks to this, the Kremlin refers to the alleged large Patriotic War, making Putinian Russia “the good ones” and Ukrainians “the bad ones”. erstwhile the first photographs of Ukrainian vehicles marked with beam crosses appeared on the network, Russian propaganda immediately linked this to painting akin symbols on German vehicles during planet War II.

This communicative has spread across the network quite a few bots, trolls, and useful idiots. Thanks to the anti-internauts and internauts sympathetic to Ukraine, they managed to push them to the defensive, but the problem remained, and pictures inactive appear in different parts of the Internet.

Crosses and Cossacks – a relation longer than it seems

The cross – in various forms and forms – is connected immanently with the past of Ukraine. The beginnings of the usage of this symbol are to date back to the times of Dmitri Wiśniowiecki, a 16th-century kniazia with a alternatively colourful résumé, perceived as the creator of the Zaporoška Sia. Wiśniowiecki utilized the coat of arms of the Corybut, on which there were 3 crosses, from where they were to penetrate the Cossack symbolism.

However we approach this story, we can clearly see the various equilateral crosses on the first Cossack banners preserved in the collections of the Swedish Army Museum. Originally obtained in 1651 by Janusz Radziwiłł, they went to Sweden, which most likely saved them from destruction. This is so a clear proof of the usage of this symbol in present-day Ukraine as early as the 17th century. To keep the right perspective, it is worth noting that Polish white and red colours were officially accepted as national only in 1831.

The later fates of the Ukrainian lands were not conducive to the improvement of their own statehood and associated covers of various symbols. However, it is essential to note the appearance of the Ukrainian People's Republic and its only combat discrimination – the Iron Cross awarded to the participants of the alleged first winter march. Its name is simply a clear mention to the Prussian "Eisernes Kreuz" established in 1813, but the Ukrainian designation had a somewhat different form. The Prussians utilized the pattern of the cavalry cross, while the Ukrainians reached for the well-known Greek cross, however, deciding to modify it by adding 4 golden borders. In this way, there was besides gammadia on the Greek cross.

Did Ukrainians, erstwhile designing their medal, mention to the "balkenkreuz", the beam cross? The German Air Force, Luftstreitkräfte, adopted a akin symbol at the turn of March and April 1918 as a standard way of marking their aircraft. Are we dealing with borrowing, or is there a convergence of form? I can't answer that question. However, this form has become a permanent symbol utilized by Ukrainian armed forces, and is now a symbol of the 28th Mechanized Brigade.

So let's decision on to 2022/2023

And so, having exhausted almost the full limit of the characters bountifully allocated to the authors by number Titus, we can yet rise the fundamental problem behind this article.

White crosses, in various forms, were first observed on Ukrainian vehicles around the time the successful counteroffensive began in the direction of Kharkiv. If this symbol is so linked to Ukrainian culture, why was it not previously marked mass vehicles belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine?

The answer to this question is trivially simple, as long as 1 has patience and a willingness to realize what both fighting parties use. At the beginning of this phase of the war (lasting from 2014), Ukrainian and Russian vehicles could be rather easy distinguished, even looking at their camouflage or any of their characteristics. However, erstwhile the Russian army suffered its first major defeats, serious amounts of equipment fell into the hands of the Ukrainians. Mealing the celebrated side of Oryx, it can be said that to date the Ukrainians have captured at least 546 tanks, not counting another armored and unarmoured vehicles.

As a consequence of the introduction of a large amount of acquired equipment, Ukrainians faced a serious problem. If we and they usage the same vehicles, how do we know who's who? The correct recognition of the enemy is simply a substance of life and death on the battlefield. So a clear and clear symbol was needed, easy to apply in field conditions.

"Enough exoticly marked T-84:"

Greek crosses were reached, both in their classical form and in their known order. Simple "+" is unmistakable with the letter "Z", now most commonly utilized by the Russians to designate their vehicles active in the "special military operation", or Russian invasion. utilizing the cross, a very crucial military problem was solved, while reaching to Ukrainian national traditions.

But why is it sometimes utilized as a ‘classical’ form and otherwise as a gammadia? I do not find the answer to this question, just as I cannot explain the only (for now) documented accident of marking the Ukrainian tank as many as 3 variants of crosses. Only the creators of these markings can explain the motives behind making 1 choice or another. However, it is worth noting that in the vast majority of accidents on Ukrainian vehicles we see a "full" Greek cross. Photos available on social media besides indicate that the symbol has become a standard way of marking vehicles utilized by the Ukrainian army, and is applied, among others, to vehicles delivered from the west.

Summary

Looking at the full case from any distance, it is easy to see the perfidence of Russian propaganda. The symbol found in the past of the planet for centuries has attempted to call it "Nazi", while denying Ukrainians the right to draw from their own rich culture. Currently, the Russians are fighting not any "ukronizists", but Ukrainian citizens and citizens, fighting for the freedom of their country bestially attacked by a stronger neighbour. It is adequate to remind us how the Russians operate, so as to show without a box which of the fighting parties deserves to be combined with the Nazis.

Historical Gdańsk tram in colours of the Free City of Gdańsk with German subtitles in 2013:

== sync, corrected by elderman ==

DWF Tw245 "Bergmann" from 1927

The tram was produced by the Gdańsk Wagon mill (now the site of the Repair Shipyard) in 1927. 24 specified trams were ordered in total, with numbers 245-268.

This series of trams, according to the Gdańsk standards, had the designation Tw245 as a combination of the word ‘Triebwagen (Tw)’ (motor car) and the number of the first wagon in the series. Trams Bergmann worked until 1973

Trams Bergmann, as a rather many series, survived planet War II and served in linear traffic until 1973, passing in the meantime many upgrades utilizing elements from the newer N-gauge wagons.

The only surviving copy of kind Tw245, number 266, respective years after its withdrawal from the movement was refreshed in the late 1980s. The 20th century erstwhile he was restored to look akin to the historical one. Since then, it has powered the historical fleet of vehicles of Gdańsk Buses and Tramwaj.

- Our Bergmann has never undergone a major renovation before. All repairs carried out so far were ongoing and had a tiny scope of work. Many elements of equipment came from N-generation trams, as a consequence of modernizations inactive from the time of its linear operation - says the CEO of GAiT, Maciej Lisicki. "A capital renovation was essential so that this nearly 100-year-old unique vehicle could enjoy its presence in the Gdańsk for decades to come.

An highly laborious and complicated process was the improvement of guidelines and documentation essential for the renovation.

The main persons liable for the improvement of historical documentation were the late Mariusz Uzębło - an undisputed expert in the past of Gdańsk tram transport and Cezary Kamiński motor vehicle GAiT and the president, active in the project, WPK GG Tramowo-Autobus Group Association.

"We looked for origin information in thematic publications from years ago, in photographs collections, in various online photogalleries, or comparing trams from a akin era in another cities. It was essential to prepare fresh method drawings, to compose everything in points, and then to supervise the work carried out. This complex and unique task in its scale required continuous consultations besides at the phase of implementation - says Cezary Kamiński.

2020 - another Gdańsk tram in WMG colours:

2025

The lions of the WMG coat of arms on this tram from afar look like the 2 horned devils that are just carrying (stealing) the Gdańsk coat of arms... ... don't they?

It is worth noting just so in the margins that present the cities pass from historical coats of arms to simple, trivial and frequently unpleasant "logs" - specified as in Poznań (it was possible to block) and in Gdańsk, but not only,

here, however, we see that historical crests and historicality are in general "in price"...

But the GZDiZ logo is not "historic" either... due to the fact that it is simply a logo for the MODERN Gdańsk?

A large deal of attention was besides given to the details they have of large importance to the historical value of the monument. Elements of equipment, specified as lamps, direction indicators, wipers, rated and descriptive plates, lighting of linear displays, power sockets for the trailer, or power collectors, in the likeness of the first ones, were reconstructed from scratch.

"The scope of the work was very wide. Furthermore, we must realise that this tram is simply a nearly 100-year-old historical vehicle. There are no spare parts for specified trams on the marketplace anymore – says Maciej Lisicki. "Working on it, including the creation of individual parts of equipment, was a craft and craftsmanship. All the details were hand-made.

Is this the kind of Poland we fought for?
