Today we present you another part of information about the forgotten past of Werwolf in the post-war Poland. This time we want to approximate the past of a tiny group of this Nazi formation, operating in the area of Oławski region (Lower Silesian Voivodeship).
Werwolf was a German guerrilla formation, left in Poland after the denial of the regular army of the 3rd Reich. Oława and the surrounding area witnessed the fighting with Nazi Germany in early 1945. The town itself was occupied by Red Army forces on February 6, 1945. A year later, the city and region was incorporated into the recently established Wroclaw Voivodeship. Most of the German population to date was displaced to Germany in accordance with the agreement between the United States, large Britain and the USSR, concluded under the provisions of the Yalta Conference.
During this time, Werwolf was active in the area. Its main activity was concentrated in Raduszkowice (about 20 km from Oława). German separatist commander was a 38-year-old associate NSDAPWilli Marder. The group had 4 members, originating from the erstwhile Hitlerjugend and NSDAP structures. They had weapons — 2 Mauser rifles with ammunition — that they found after crossing the front. They met periodically in shooting exercises to prepare them to fight at the time of the launch of the wider action.
The group was accidentally detected by MO officer Józef Maruszczyk from the MO station in Domajowice. The constable noticed 2 men carrying a shovel and a bag. erstwhile they saw a militiaman, they fled. The officer managed to halt them — as it turned out, at the time of the transfer of the concealed weapons to the fresh safe house.
Members of the group were convicted by the Military territory Court in Wrocław on October 22, 1946. Group leader, Willi Marder, boy of Paul (born 20.09.1907), a erstwhile associate of the NSDAP since 1939, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Gunter Heinze, boy of Paul (born 6.12.1930), a associate of Hitlerjugend, received a conviction of 5 years in prison. The another 2 — Bernhard Heckert, boy of Adolf (born 28.03.1930), and Gerhard Runge (Hunge) (born 11.07.1929), both members of Hitlerjugend — were sentenced to 2 years imprisonment.
In early March 1947, by virtue of amnesty, the conviction against Willie Marder was reduced to 3 years, while the remaining conspirators were given full penalties.
The past of the Slavic group of Verwolf, although unknown to the wider audience, is part of the past of this land. As in the east rungs of post-war Poland, soldiers of the Polish Army and officers of the Civic Militia faced the torturers of the UPA sign, so in the western parts of the country their colleagues fought the graves of the thousand-year-old German Reich.
