The Holy See granted “nihil obstat” to Medjugorje. The supernaturality of the expected revelations has not been confirmed, but it has been permitted to advance the worship of Our woman as Queen of Peace here.
The decision was announced at a press conference on Thursday 19 September. The card was involved. Victor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of Faith; and Fr Armando Matteo, Secretary of the Doctrine Section of Dycasteria. The Vatican website published a paper entitled "Queen of Peace" Note on the spiritual experience associated with Medjugorje.
The Vatican made its decision in relation to the standards for discerning alleged supernatural phenomena of May this year.
The Vatican emphasized that "conclusions... do not entail the judgement of the moral life of the expected seers".
The Holy See pointed out that although there are many affirmative elements in the Medjugorje message, it cannot be excluded that in any messages there are “controversy” and that any of them may have been “related to the desires or interests of the expected seers.”
‘The reader should remember that whenever this Note mentions messages Our Lady, it's always to be understood alleged messages“ – stressed.
The Vatican has so clearly cut off the designation of the truthfulness of the apparitions; on the another hand, attention has been paid to pastoral fruit, and these are to be large.
"Positive fruits appear primarily in promoting a healthy practice of surviving by faith, according to what is present in the tradition of the Church. In the case of Medjugorje, this applies to both those who were far from the religion and those who so far practiced religion superficially. The specificity of this place consists of a multitude of specified fruits: many conversions, frequent return to the sacramental practice (the Eucharist and reconciliation), many vocations for priestly, spiritual and marital life, deepening of the life of faith, a more intense practice of prayer, many cases of reconciliation between spouses, and renewal of matrimony and household life" is written.
The Vatican emphasized that good fruit appears "primarily in the context of pilgrimages to the places of the first events, not during meetings with
The Holy See besides appreciated the word “Queen of Peace” which involves the content of messages of expected revelations. She besides pointed out that, in principle, the message calls for healthy devotion based on Holy Mass and prayer.
"The messages as a full are of large value and express in various words the constant teaching of the Gospel. any messages disagree from and even seem to contradict specified affirmative and upbuilding content. It is worth to be careful that these fewer misleading elements do not overshadow the beauty of the whole" - stressed the decision.
A number of specified statements have been highlighted, which are contradictory or contain questionable content. For example, the Vatican wrote: “In addition to frequent exhortations to the faithful in the parish, it seems mostly that Our woman promotes listening to her messages so insistently that sometimes this call emerges more than the content of the messages themselves. [...] This threatens the emergence of dependence and excessive expectations among the faithful, which would yet obscure the central meaning of the revealed Word.”
"Probably, this repeated admonition is so frequently due to the love and generous zeal of the expected seers, who were afraid that Mother's calls for conversion and peace would be ignored," the Holy See assessed.
It was besides noted that misleading expressions specified as those which attribute Mary to speaking about “my plan” or “my project”, which might propose imposing the will of Mary, while in fact Our woman “fully accepts God’s plans”. This is to be interpreted as taking them ‘until they are expressed as their own’.
In the end, the Vatican decided to grant Medjugorje “nihil obstat”, recalling that the faithful “may receive a affirmative impulse to Christian life”.
"The evaluation of so many and widespread, beautiful and affirmative fruits does not mean that the alleged supernatural events are authentic, but simply indicates that "in the midst of" this spiritual phenomenon of Medjugorje, the Holy Spirit works fruitfully for the benefit of the faithful. That is why it is encouraged to appreciate and share the pastoral value of this spiritual proposal," he stressed.
The cult in Medjugorje is to be promoted, nevertheless under the supervision of the Apostolic Visitor.
"The people who go to Medjugorje should be firmly guided to accept the fact that pilgrimages do not take place to meet the expected seers, but to meet Mary, the Queen of Peace and, in faithfulness to her love for her Son, to meet Christ and to perceive to him through the meditation of the Word, participation in the Eucharist and eucharistic adoration," stressed.
