In fresh weeks, the subject of the deployment of atomic weapons in Poland has sparked a stormy discussion both at home and abroad. president Andrzej Duda expressed his hope that Poland would join the U.S. atomic Sharing program, which would mean moving part of the US atomic arsenal into our country. However, U.S. Vice president J.D. Vance expressed scepticism towards this proposal, stressing that the Donald Trump administration is pursuing atomic deescalation.

Andrzej Duda calls for atomic weapons for Poland

President Andrzej Duda in an interview with the British paper “Financial Times” confirmed that Poland is curious in participating in the “ atomic Sharing” programme. “We gave our proposal to peculiar Envoy Donald Trump, General Keith Kellogg, who visited Warsaw in February”, said Duda. This program assumes the engagement of allied states in the retention and possible usage of American atomic weapons.

The president stressed that in the face of the increasing threats from Russia, Poland needs an additional protective umbrella. We should be prepared for all eventuality. atomic weapons are not only a deterrent tool, but besides a safety guarantee," added Duda.

Vance: Trump will not decision atomic weapons to east Europe

U.S. Vice president J.D. Vance referred to the proposal of the Polish president in an interview with Fox News. "I haven't talked to the president about this, but I would be shocked if he supported the deployment of atomic weapons further east of Europe," Vance stated. The politician recalled that Donald Trump has been seeking to reduce the hazard of atomic conflict since the beginning of his term.

We're talking about the future of human civilization. There are people who have dreamed of leading us to a atomic conflict, and Donald Trump is leading us in precisely the other direction," stressed the vice president. His words propose that the US administration does not intend to extend the atomic Sharing programme to east European countries.

Poles support the deployment of atomic weapons

Despite the scepticism of the American authorities, Poles seem to be in favour of the thought of deploying atomic weapons in the country. According to a poll by the Pollster investigation Institute for “Super Express”, as many as 63% of respondents support this initiative. 37% of those surveyed are opposed.

The survey was carried out on 7-9 March 2025 on a group of 1015 people. "The situation has changed adequate that Poles are willing to deploy atomic weapons in Poland. We must have a protective umbrella in these troubled times," commented General Waldemar Skrzypczak, erstwhile commander of the Land Army.

Will Poland become part of the atomic Sharing programme?

Although president Duda's proposal met with enthusiasm among parts of society, its implementation seems unlikely. The U.S. administration's position, expressed by Vice president Vance, points to a reluctance to further militarize east Europe.

– A serious discussion on atomic weapons should be started in Poland – concluded Gen. Skrzypczak. However, without the support of the United States, the implementation of this thought remains in the realm of dreams.
