A KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) Boeing 787-9 transporting Queen Mathilde of Belgium executed an unscheduled landing in Costa Rica after discovering a cracked cockpit windshield.

The aircraft, operating from Amsterdam to San Jose on February 9, 2025, landed at San Jose International Airport at 5 PM local time, eleven minutes before its scheduled arrival.

Queen Mathilde undertook this 11-hour journey for a three-day Unicef mission in Costa Rica. Belgian royal correspondent Wim Dehandschutter, present on the flight, reported that the departure experienced a 20-minute delay at Schiphol Airport.

The severity of the situation contrasts with passenger experiences during the flight. Dehandschutter revealed through social media platform X that passengers remained unaware of the windshield damage until after landing.

The flight encountered standard turbulence, and while the landing proved notably forceful, passengers received no emergency notifications during the journey.
