Ukrainian Border Service informed to thwart the effort to smuggle a large batch of consumer electronics from Poland to Ukraine. The event took place at the Malhowice-Nizankowice border crossing in 2024, where officers checked the Renault microbus. As it turned out, it carried an unreported product of considerable value. The retained items are worth 35 million hryvnia.
Ukrainians were exporting stolen phones from Poland. During detailed vehicle inspection, border guards discovered a specially prepared retention compartment in the baggage compartment. It featured a full of 829 Apple devices including modern smartphones, headphones and smartwatche. Among the secured items were iPhones models 15, 16 and 17.
According to the first estimates of Ukrainian services, the full value of confiscated electronics is over 35 million hryvnia, which corresponds to the amount of about $800,000 US dollars. The goods were not reported for customs clearance, and its carriage was of the nature of organized smuggling.
The Border Service of Ukraine emphasizes that specified attempts at illegal entry of costly electronic devices are increasingly frequent, especially in the Polish-Ukrainian direction. The advanced prices of fresh electronics in the Ukrainian marketplace make smuggling equipment of known brands an attractive origin of profit for criminal groups.
The retained vehicle and the safe goods were transferred to the competent customs authorities. Drivers are liable for administrative or criminal liability, depending on further investigative findings and legal qualifications. It has not yet been revealed precisely the origin of the smuggled phones. possibly they were stolen from any warehouse in Poland.
OUR COMMENTS: The question remains why Polish services did not detect attempts to smuggle and did so, usually corrupt Ukrainian borderers. Was the control there purely illusory, as were those at the border with Germany?
