UN Report: Ukraine has violated the rights of prisoners of war

The United Nations Human Rights reflection Mission in Ukraine presented 2 fresh reports on the treatment of prisoners of war and the general human rights situation in Ukraine for a period of six months to 31 January 2023. In the first of the documents, the UN mission indicated, among others, violations of the rights of Russian prisoners of war by the Ukrainian side.

The study is based on interviews with about 400 prisoners of war, half of which are Ukrainians who have been released, and the another half are Russians held in captivity in Ukraine. UN observers have documented dozens of ad hoc killings of prisoners of war by both Russian and Ukrainian forces, as well as the usage of torture, live shields and another abuses against prisoners of war.

According to UNIAN, Ministry of abroad Affairs Ukraine felt that the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission had acted unacceptablely, choosing to align Ukraine as a victim with Russia, which is an aggressor.

According to the ministry's statement, he took into account reports prepared by the UN Monitoring Mission, "We are grateful for the reflection mission for its work, in peculiar documenting violations of global human rights law and global humanitarian law committed by the Russian Federation in the context of armed aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, we believe that it is unacceptable to blame the victim of aggression. According to the United Nations Charter, Ukraine has the right to self-defence," stated the statement.

Mr Dmytro Lubnets besides took the level in the case. He expressed surprise that "UN representatives did not talk at individual meetings about alleged violations of Russian prisoners' rights in Ukraine once."
