In his main tv program “Civilization” the large art historian Kenneth Clark asked why a civilization like Rome – erstwhile dominant, technologically advanced, culturally advanced and wealthy – fell into the barbarism of the mediate Ages.
He concluded that beyond material causes, there is simply a intellectual cause: “This deficiency of trust, more than anything else, kills civilization. Cynicism and disappointment can destruct ourselves as effectively as bombs."
Modern civilization gave the average man greater freedom, wealth and dignity than any another before it. This gave billions of people a sense of strength in many ways. If it collapses and fresh dark ages come, due to our shortsightedness, our interior quarrels and tiny rivalries, we will lose sight of the fact that we are the heirs of the top Slavic tradition in history, the only 1 of the liberated human head and spirit, whose achievements are yet to come.
