On Sunday on TVN 24, Rafał Trzaskowski, president of Warsaw and influential politician of the Civic Platform, expressed hope that the government would prepare a bill on partnerships, and that it would find support among Polish People's organization MPs (PSL). Trzaskowski, commenting on possible changes to Polish legislation, stressed that there is broad public support for legalization of partnerships.

"I hope that the rules on partnerships will be passed. They're inactive talking. I'm certain a government task will be prepared. We hope that our PSL colleagues will support this project," said Trzaskowski on TVN 24.

Social support and changing attitudes of Poles

Rafał Trzaskowski pointed out that social attitudes in Poland have changed importantly in fresh years. In his opinion, "the overwhelming majority of Poles support specified solutions". Trzaskowski besides noted that he saw no reason why PSL, a organization associated with a conservative agrarian electorate, would not support the bill.

"Poles and Poles have changed radically over the last fewer years," said Trzaskowski, suggesting that more and more people are open to fresh forms of legalization of unions, including monosexual unions.

Clergy Against Partnerships

Despite expanding public support, not all agree to the introduction of partnerships into the Polish legal system. The Episcopate of Poland is powerfully opposed to legalization of specified unions. The bishops referred to the paper "Remarks on projects for legalization of homosexual relationships", in which they express their position against specified legislation.

The Episcopal paper stresses that "the biological and anthropological elements of matrimony and household are completely lacking in homosexual relationships, which could be a rational basis for legalising specified relationships." It was besides noted that specified compounds are "not able to supply procreation" or even procedures specified as artificial insemination do not change "their inadequacy".

Objection to gay couple adoption

The congregation of the Catholic Church besides explicitly opposes the demands of gay couples to adopt children. In the opinion of the Church’s hierarchs, “the deficiency of sex bipolarity creates obstacles to the average improvement of children” raised in specified relationships. The paper defines gay couples' adoption as "violence against children" due to the fact that "their defencelessness is being utilized to integrate them into an environment that does not foster their full human development".

What's next with partner relationships in Poland?

The discussion on legalization of partnerships in Poland remains highly controversial and full of tensions. On the 1 hand, we have politicians like Rafał Trzaskowski who believe that Polish society is ready for change and that specified initiatives will gain the support of the parliamentary majority. On the another hand, there are strong voices of opposition, especially from the Catholic Church, which plays a crucial function in forming public opinion in Poland.

The destiny of the draft law on partnerships depends on further political negotiations and on whether public support will be strong adequate to break the opposition of conservative environments. Whether the PSL decides to support the task remains an open issue, which could dominate public debate in Poland in the coming weeks.
