United States president Donald Trump again entered the global arena with a strong and uncompromising message to NATO members.
In a peculiar letter and a series of social media entries, he called on allies to take decisive action against Russia and China, whose cooperation he felt prolongs the war in Ukraine. His main request? Complete purchases of Russian oil and impose 50–100% duties on China.
"I am willing to impose serious sanctions on Russia erstwhile all NATO countries agree to do the same and halt buying oil from Russia."
Trump left no uncertainty as to what he considers essential for the end of the war.
"If NATO does what I say, the war will end rapidly and all these lives will be saved! If not, you are wasting my time and time, energy and money.”
Trump believes that the acquisition of Russian oil by the countries of the alliance is not only morally unacceptable but besides strategically harmful. He called it “shocking” and expressed concern that this weakens the common position towards the Kremlin.
“This importantly weakens your negotiating position and bargaining power towards Russia.”
In his statements, Trump mentioned circumstantial NATO states, which in his opinion inactive support the Russian economy through purchases of natural materials – including Hungary, Slovakia and Turkey. The latter, according to Centre for investigation on Energy and Clean Air, since 2023 has been the 3rd largest buyer of Russian oil, after China and India.
In his communications Trump besides proposed extremist action against Beijing. He suggested that NATO as a full impose duties of 50 to 100 percent on China – and keep them until the end of the war in Ukraine.
"I believe that NATO's sanctions against Russia, combined with NATO's imposition, as a group, of tariffs of 50% to 100% on China, which will be full withdrawn after the end of Russia's war with Ukraine, will be a immense aid in ending this deadly but absurd war."
In his opinion, Russia's relation with China is simply a key component of the full conflict. He claims that only a violent blow to the Chinese economy can actually affect Putin's decisions.
"China has strong control and even a grip over Russia, and these powerful duties will break that grip."
Trump had already taken akin action against India – he imposed a 25% import taxation on goods from that country, justifying it by importing Russian oil. However, China continues to abstain from circumstantial decisions, even though, as it itself admits, their cooperation with Moscow is more advanced.
“It’s about working together. I am ready to act erstwhile you are ready. Just say when?”
Trump consistently repeats that if he had been president in 2022, the war would not have started at all. present he assures that he inactive has a plan to finish it rapidly and effectively – provided that NATO allies halt delaying action.
“This war would never have started if I had been president. But now it can be completed, only 1 must act together and decisively."
The work for the ongoing conflict is not Vladimir Putin, who initiated the invasion, but his political rivals.
"It was Biden and Zelenski who failed. It is their mistakes, their weakness and deficiency of strategy.”
Skipping Putin in the context of guilt creates confusion and frustration in Kiev, where stronger action was expected after Trump. So far, despite announcements, Trump has not introduced any fresh sanctions against Russia. Also, the fresh gathering with Putin in Alaska did not bring any specifics about ending the war.
Tension increased further after the incidental with Russian drones that violated Poland's airspace. NATO's ally reacted decisively by shooting down drones. Trump, however, tried to minimize the situation.
“It could have been a mistake.”
This message was received as inadequate to the seriousness of the situation and as another example of avoiding confrontation with Moscow.
In Trump's eyes, the war in Ukraine is not only an armed conflict, but above all a game of influence – economic, energy and geopolitical. The impact on oil, the impact on China and the full coordination in NATO are expected to be a way of breaking this "absurd" deadlock.
" NATO's commitment to win this war was far from 100%. Time to halt fooling around. It's time to act.”
Will the members of the alliance follow his voice? It's hard to predict. Trump remains a controversial and excruciating figure in Europe. However, its narrative, nevertheless simplistic and brutal, goes to those who anticipate simple, fast solutions.
“This war is deadly, but absurd. It can be terminated. You just gotta want.”
The question is whether the planet truly wants the end of the war – or just waiting for it to resolve itself.
