One of the most common misunderstandings in public debate is to identify liberalism with the belief that all views, religions and moral norms are equivalent. It's a misunderstanding.
Tolerance does not mean that others’ views are true. It means refusing to usage force against man just due to the fact that he believes he is wrong, foolish, or repugnant. You can view the thought as false, fight it with arguments, criticize it publicly, deny its support and not let its promoters into your own organization. It is not only right to turn the dispute over fact into the right to usage terror. This is liberalism and tolerance.
This approach does not destruct the truth, but changes its method of investigation. fact is to be defended by reason, testimony, argument, theory, persuasion, or example of life. If he needs a baton, prison, and confiscation, he ceases to be the object of conviction and becomes an order of power.
Freedom of speech does not mean that everyone has to perceive to all opinion. spiritual freedom does not mean that all religion is true. Freedom of association does not mean that all organization is good. Rather, it means that a man can peacefully choose, convince others, and bear the moral and social consequences of his choices — without subjecting him to force for his very different beliefs.
Tolerance is about violence, and more specifically, getting free of it to convince and understand. However, it ends erstwhile he encounters another violence. force can be utilized in defence of force and tolerance is no longer applicable.
Tolerance should not be confused with acceptance. Acceptance requires respect for another views, and tolerance allows them to be despised, regarded as evil and fought against them, but without violence.
Tolerance is classical liberalism and it is simply a moral request in our civilization. Immorality begins erstwhile we gotta tolerate to replace acceptance, and that is what the left does.
