The nomination of Kamala Harris as a Democratic candidate was accepted by applause throughout the party's establishment, but not by progressive populists. Harris' views on economical issues stay a mystery. However, its donors and elder advisors – many representatives of large Tech and Wall Street – made people like Matt Stoller, an anti-trust activist, and the editors of "The American Prospect" alarmed, especially in light of Donald Trump's decision to elect J. D. Vance as a possible vice president.
By choosing Tim Walz as her co-candidate, Harris made a serious motion to strengthen the left-wing populist flank and neutralize Vance's possible attractiveness.
