ATLANTA- Delta Air Lines (DL) has announced plans to launch a new transatlantic service connecting New York (JFK) to Porto (OPO). The nonstop flights are set to begin in May 2026, marking a significant expansion of the airline’s European summer schedule.
The addition of this route will make Delta the only U.S. carrier operating nonstop flights between the United States and Porto. It comes at a time when demand for leisure travel to secondary European cities is increasing.

Delta expands European network with Porto flights
Delta confirmed that the Atlanta–Porto service will operate four times a week during the summer season. The airline will deploy the Boeing 767-300ER on the route, featuring Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Main Cabin seating.
This configuration ensures a mix of premium and economy options for business and leisure travelers alike.
The flights are designed to complement Delta’s extensive European network, which already includes nonstop service to Lisbon (LIS) and other major destinations.
With the addition of Porto, Delta strengthens its position in Portugal, appealing to travelers who want direct access to northern Portugal’s cultural and coastal attractions.
The Atlanta–Porto route will give Delta a competitive edge by adding another nonstop option from its largest hub. Competing U.S. airlines have focused heavily on major European capitals, but Delta’s move positions it to serve both high-demand and emerging destinations.

Porto is a growing transatlantic destination
Porto has emerged as a popular European destination, recognized for its historic architecture, vibrant wine culture, and accessibility to the Douro Valley.
The airline’s decision aligns with a wider trend of U.S. carriers launching flights to secondary European cities, capitalizing on increasing leisure demand and the diversification of travel preferences.
Paul Baldoni, Senior Vice President of Network Planning at Delta, was buoyed by the addition and said:
Whether discovering Portugal or traveling to our other new destinations such as Sardinia and Malta, these additions expand choice for our customers and reinforce JFK’s role as a leading global gateway.
The use of the Boeing 767-300ER allows Delta to balance passenger capacity with efficiency while maintaining service standards consistent with its broader transatlantic network.
Passengers can expect access to Wi-Fi, seat-back entertainment, and Delta’s updated premium cabin offerings.

Bottom Line
With four weekly flights on the Boeing 767-300ER starting from May 21, 2026, the airline expands its European network and strengthens its presence in Portugal.
The move reflects growing demand for direct access to secondary European cities and highlights Delta’s strategy to diversify transatlantic offerings.
