Ukraine must number on the fact that, like Cyprus or both Korea, it will be as a divided country until a long-term solution to the problem is found, said Heinz Theisen, prof. of Political Sciences at the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia.
As he put it, sooner or later Western governments will besides realize that there cannot be a winner in this war.
In fresh statements, you have placed work for starting a war in Ukraine, not only Russia, but besides the West, especially the United States, which, as you say, crossed the "red lines" and violated the Russian sphere of influence. The war has been going on for a year. To what degree do the large powers now intend to halt fighting and start peace talks?
– From a moral point of view, it is clear that Russia is liable for the outbreak of war. The geopolitical situation is different. Ukraine is simply a neighbour of Russia and the United States is very far away, but since 2002 it has been striving to integrate Ukraine with NATO structures. Ukraine is presently a de facto NATO member. The West made a large mistake trying to drag Ukraine to its side, crossing a red line long ago designated by the Russians. Ukraine should stay neutral. The only immediate solution is to start negotiations, but Ukraine must number on the fact that, like Cyprus or both Korea, it will be as a divided country until a long-term solution is found. It's the only way I can imagine ending a war.
Do you besides think that you can imagine that the large powers, and even Ukraine, are already reasoning about specified a scenario?
– They will gotta think about it due to the fact that they most likely already realized that neither Ukraine nor Russia will win this war. We must compromise. A bad compromise is besides better than continuing the war.
When is the time to compromise? For now, everyone seems to want to go to war.
– This is not necessarily actual of the peoples of Europe. In Germany, a camp of opponents of arms transfers is strengthened. They believe that it does not substance whether the east part of Ukraine belongs to Russia or Ukraine, but that there is peace and the end of demolition in Ukraine. For now, Western governments have given precedence to the recovery of occupied territories alternatively than peace. I just hope they realize sooner or later there can't be a winner in this war.
Western governments claim that the aggressor state attacked an independent state that wants freedom, so it is their work to defend it. They say, let Ukraine decide whether it wants to be a associate of the European Union or NATO. Do you think this kind of perception is irrational?
– This is simply a moral approach that does not work in global politics. I'm a realist. We request to think about the geographical position of countries and the multipolar planet order. Not all countries can decide where they want to belong due to the fact that geography determines their fate. If Mexico wanted to join the russian Union or China, the United States would immediately block it.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán besides believes that no country can change its place, Hungarians should always imagine surviving in the Moscow-Berlin-Stambul triangle. Moscow repeatedly made it clear last year that from its point of view the accession of the countries of Central Europe, including Hungary, is simply a kind of red line. So where should we draw these geographical and geographical boundaries?
– In order to answer this question, we must take into account not only geopolitical aspects but besides geocultural aspects. Everyone knows that Poland and the Baltic countries belong culturally to the West. This cannot be said of most of Ukraine. Culturally and religiously, she is much more Russian-oriented. We must respect the cultural boundaries of the world. This is what the West should have done in the case of the muslim planet before it intervened and so failed. partially Catholic and Western and Orthodox east parts of Ukraine, if they were then divided into 2 parts, we would not be here now. Now the only solution is to neutralize the country.
Prof. Heinz Theisen
You mentioned a realpolitic: the erstwhile Chancellor Germany seemed to be aware of this concept, the Social Democrats besides sought pragmatic relations with Russia, but now their chief, the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, opposes this policy. What happened?
The Americans have imposed their will on us. In fresh decades, we thought the planet would be multipolar, but the Americans decided it should become bipolar, China is the other pole, but Russia is crossing out of Europe. War is simply a large chance for the United States to weaken Russians and Europeans at the same time. The Nord Stream gas pipeline detonation perfectly symbolizes the fresh relations between America and Europe: belong to us, not to Russia! The Social Democrats were thus forced into this policy, in return threatened to lose America as a partner. The German government refused to take any chances.
You said that EU sanctions against Russian energy carriers are unjustified and endanger German industry. What are the symptoms?
- Yeah. Many industrial companies leave the country, including moving their production lines to China, where energy is cheaper. Hungary is clever in providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine, but they argue the sanctions imposed on the Russian energy sector because, as they know well, they pay the price for it. Ukraine's interests must not be more crucial than Europe's interests. We request Russian energy supplies. It seems to me that only Hungary in Europe operates a sensible realpolitik.
Is there a hazard that another European countries will besides go into war on continued supplies of Western weapons?
– The more weapons we deliver and the more Russia senses the danger of defeat, the more the anticipation of retaliation, for example, with atomic weapons that would completely destruct Ukraine increases. The worst script would be to attack countries supplying weapons – even Germany or Poland – due to the fact that knowing Americans, they will not aid us. We saw what happened in Vietnam and Afghanistan: they withdrew as shortly as they saw that their allies had been defeated.
