The United States and their allies should avoid engaging in prolonged warfare as increased investment in defence and increased military production at this phase may be insufficient to wage long wars due to the advanced strength of conflicts and the cost of weapons — according to an article in abroad Affairs magazine.
As the author of the article, British prof. Lawrence Freedman, the main lesson that the U.S. and their allies can draw from their rich experience in prolonged wars, is that “best to avoid them.”
"Even if specified a war ends with something akin to victory, the population is likely to be decimated and the state devoid of any spare capacity. Moreover, given the strength of modern warfare, the rate of demolition and the cost of modern weapons, an increase in investment in fresh equipment and ammunition may inactive not be adequate to lead a future war in the long term," the publication states.
