W Germany has a increasing sense of danger among citizens. More and more people fear for their safety, and crime statistic show an alarming trend. According to the latest survey conducted by Ins for “BILD”, as many as 45% of respondents stated that their sense of safety has fallen over the last 5 years, of which 25% believe it has fallen significantly. Only 15 percent of the surveyees now feel safer than 5 years ago.

Fear of Physical Violence

Concerns about physical force are peculiarly evident in the study. As many as 41% of respondents admitted that they were afraid of direct physical assault in their area. This results in increasing social concerns that may affect the regular lives of German residents.

Dangerous places: railway stations and parks

Railway stations were indicated by 52 percent surveyed as peculiarly dangerous places. This is confirmed by police statistics, which show that the number of crimes with a knife at railway stations is increasing. In the first half of 2024, the national police reported 1012 specified crimes, most of which were in Hannover (46) and Frankfurt (44).

However, the sense of danger is not limited to railway stations. 39% of respondents besides considered parks to be very dangerous places, indicating a wide scope of places where Germany feels threatened.

Crime among immigrants and failure of security

Although the “BILD” did not point out this explicitly, the decline in safety in Germany is mostly linked to expanding crime among immigrants. Data show that foreigners accounted for over 40% of suspected crimes in Germany last year. Moreover, the November data of the national Criminal Office (BKA) indicate that German citizens are 4 times more likely to be victims of crimes committed by migrants than vice versa.

In 2022, as many as 47,923 Germans fell victim to crimes in which the perpetrators were migrants. This is an 18-percent increase compared to the erstwhile year.

Summary

The increasing concerns of the Germans about their safety are reflected in the results of fresh investigation and crime statistics. Fear of violence, especially in public places specified as railway stations and parks, is becoming increasingly common. At the same time, the problem of immigration crime is becoming a key component of the discussion on national security. This situation requires appropriate action at both local and national level to guarantee that citizens feel safe and stable.
